Yes...you can add RAM yourself without voiding any warranties. Our advice would be to not buy it from Apple, but instead from either crucial.com or macsales.com. You'll save a ton of money from either site. And the RAM's not difficult at all to install.

Just to add a note - RAM is user-upgradeable on all models of iMac EXCEPT for the 2012 21.5" iMac (and, quite likely, any future iterations of that model).
