In any case, I'm finally doen with it, it took almost 5 hours to create the bootable drive and clone my startup HD onto my ext. HD's partition... And I also managed to reduce that partition and enlarge the other, dedicated for backup, thanks to your help, Kurt.

Oh! Duh! The other likely problem was that Time Machine was still active and was what was locking the drive as "in use". A restart would be no help as TM would immediately link to the drive again. You'd have to go into the System Preferences and turn it off before trying to modify the drive.
