I cannot get an HP LaserJet 4050TN to work with my new iMac.

Background:

Previously, I had been able to print successfully from an iMac runing OS 10.7 to an HP LaserJet 4050TN.

I recently upgraded to a new iMac running OS 10.8 and now this new iMac will not recognize the printer.

I've tried several things, including calling Apple Care to resolve this problem.

Apple Care said they see very few ethernet printers now but I hate to give up this printer. Apple Care tried but gave up and suggested I call HP

The printer is a rather old 'eternet' unit which is connected to my Time Machine via an etherne cable. There is some mention by HP at its website about Mac OS 10.8 working with HP printers differently than previous Mac operating systems.

I tried to set up the printer by its IP address but could not get that to work either. (I used IP address 10.0.1.6)

Anyone out there know any work arounds?

Thanks for any suggestions.

See this article for HP Printer Drivers for Lion & ML:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

If that doesn't work you can try to reset the printing system:

    - Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan

    - Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.

WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!

    - Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Default tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

    Any better?

    Thanks Bee,

    But I still can't print.

I read the link  -- no fix.  I also tried restting the printing system previously, no fix.

My printer is not there, so -- can not add it.

I've learned this since my original post: My wife's Power Book runs 10.8 and CAN print to this printer so it is not a 10.8 incompatability issue.

How do you know the IP address of the printer? Can you ping it?

    Hi Linc,

I got the IP address from the Configuration Page which I printed from the printer as directed by HP's owners manual.

Please tell me how i would ping the printer. Maybe that would help.

    Thank you.

Select the text below (not including the blank space at the end of the line), then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):

    10.0.1.6

Launch the Network Utility application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Network Utility in the icon grid.

Select the Ping tab and paste into the address field (command-V). Press return. Post the output that appears below – the text, please, not a screenshot.

    Hi Linc,

I will try your suggestion as soon as I can get on my iMac again which will be tomorrow morning.

    Thank you for that information.

    I can now print!

Thank you Linc. I was able to Add Printer at the IP address. (I don't know why that method  would not work yesterday because I don't think I did anything differently this time).

Before the success, I updated my Airport Utility sofware, then I power cycled the iMac and printer. Maybe that had something to do with it. Or perhaps the Ping process made to two machines recognize each other.

    All's well that ends well.

    Thanks again.

    hi Linc,

i have a similar issue like Larry; my time capsule is hooked up to my imac via ethernet, wifi enabled on imac but not on time capsule; imac enables internet sharing via TC to other computers; HP 4050 is hooked up to TC; when i run ping with the HP 4050 ip address (from its conf page) i get this:

    Ping has started…

    PING 192.0.0.192 (192.0.0.192): 56 data bytes

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 0

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 1

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 2

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 4

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 5

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 6

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 7

    Request timeout for icmp_seq 8

    --- 192.0.0.192 ping statistics ---

10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss

    any idea ?

    many thx, oliver

    Oliver,

Just in case Linc doesn't see this, I suggest you try this:

    • power cycle everything
    • open any document and select print
    • in print dialogue box, choose Printer> add Printer
    • select IP tab
    • enter IP address of you printer

at this point it should identify your printer and download needed software.

Note that the printer's IP address can change so print a fresh configuration page to verify the IP address.

    good luck!
