Q: Mini display port to HDMI problem

So I guess cable is better than adapter then...

But if you got a brand new NEET adapter, why didn't that work but the cable did...?

Monoprice.com recently inrtoduced a mini display port (Thunderbolt) to HDMI cable, part # 9476. It's 15" and supports audio

I could get it to work with my Sony Bravia as an external monitor, but not in mirror mode.

I'll work on it more after the Super Bowl. ;-)

BTW, I've been able to connect my MBP to the Bravia in mirror mode with a mini display port to VGA adapter and VGA cable. Both available at Monoprice.com.

1) You have not tried everything aarjee suggested on page 41. The point 4 there reads - apple has a problem detecting MDP male to HDMI Female adaptors and you should try MDP male to HDMI male cable- which evidently you did not try

2) I understand your frustration and denial that it may indeed be a cable problem (We can never be sure, can we?) But the cable seems to work and the adaptor does not. I went through the same denial sydrom that it can be a problem with my adaptors (3 of them). The direct cable just works. Not just Neet, but also Iwires, belkin etc etc

3) Cable quality differs vastly but is not exactly based on price. In that case a $500 windows laptop should not deliver Video over HDMI which a $2000 Apple mbp is incapable of so to seem.

4) Also read my reply on this very page (46) which list the various cable options available at different price points.

I hope the direct cable works for you. If it does not it is probably a logic board issue and you may need to get your board replaced

Okay, I bought a cable.

My MacBook Pro is Late 2011.  Do all Mini Displayport cables carry audio capabilities or only some of them do?

My solution was a 99 USD AppleTV unit + 9,99 USD AirParrot application which enables wireless display extention.

So far, it works without a mistake and covers up all my needs.

Most cables do. However pre 2011 mbps dont port sound to mdp. So it depends on the model of your mbp.

If your mbp does support audio you will still have to change audio settings on your mbp afterwards. Most HDMI devices wont support volume control on MBP. So i suggest you download sunflowerbed(free app)

An expensive solution to a simple problem IMHO.

I have a late 2011 MBP and I already have sunflowerbed.  Is there anything else I need to do to turn on the audio? 

You need to go to sound settings. Set output to sunflower 2 channel

Now once the video feed is showing on the ledtv. click on the sunflower icon on top (if does not already show, click open sunflowerbed form applications) and it will show 3 options - none, internal speakers, hdmi. click on hdmi so that it is the ticked option. now you should have sound output through the tv speakers

I set email notifications a long time ago on this and have been receiving emails for what seems like years about replies here. Can't believe how long this is, but I finally figured out how to stop the notifications. Again, my advice is to buy new cables, the cheap one with lots of five star reviews from dx.com is good, and if it gets kinked and needs replacing it's only about $7 for another one. So stock up on a big order, because free shipping from China is SLOW.

HDCP is for commercial rights holder protection.  If you'r playing anything that has HDCP encoded, and you use a DVI adapter, you have broken the HDCP spec and therfore will find yourself in a world of poo.  Lost of a single color, blue screen, no audio, audio drops i or out, de rez of content , etc.  The symptoms seem so different from one box to another, but it's all the same problem.  HDCP compliance is un available via DVI.

Non-apple users would get a real kick out of this thread.  These products are touted as where technology starts and ends as far as ease of use and build quality is concerned.  Having switched to apple at the urging of my family I'm actually looking forward to my next upgrade back to a simple, cheap reliable windows (hopefully not 8) laptop.  Frustration hasn't abated with the inflexible OS (the latest i-tunes is a doozy) and an issue like this HDMI out mess that has remained unaddressed by the manufacturer for so long after paying top dollar for my MBP - apple have made it an easy decision.

Hi Ya'll, my hdmi connection was working perfectly up until a few days ago. My MBP will not turn flash blue or do the handshake at all. It does not detect a connection whatsoever. Any thoughts???

that was precisely my problem, read my post on page 46 for what fixed it for me.

Thanks CB. Sorry but what do you mean by clip the GFX switch 3 times? I have gtfxcardstatus 2.3 and have tried going back and form from integrated, discrete, and dynamic to no avail. Am I missing something? Thanks.
