As I said in my first post, it's not about the points but rather so that people can find the answer right away, without having to go through all the responses.

fn-right and fn-left arrow seem to be the default in other applications as well. iTunes works the same way.

For good or ill (mostly ill, it seems) your thread comes up near the top when people search for this topic. It has nothing to do with points. It would just be helpful to people.

The the key combinations using fn+ works just as expected, but in Mail if you want to scroll all the way to the top or bottom of the emails lists, then this is what works for me:

to the top of the list:          fn+control+left arrow

to the bottom of the list:     fn+control+right arrow

I've been looking for this for a long time....

I'm curious if there's a way to jump to the top AND select the first message. Every time I use fn + left arrow, I then have to resort to the trackpad (or mouse) to pick the first message. Hitting tab, return, etc. does not work for me.

Anyone have a solution to this?

In any case, many thanks to odelljamie for the right answer: fn + left arrow does work perfectly to jump to the top of the inbox.

It's an improvement certainly but could be better. What I was looking for is to be able to press one key combination to navigate to the top of Inbox from any mailbox - eg your in the sent box and you want to go straight to the top of the inbox. I know you can press command +1 to go to inbox but then you have to press Fn and left. A smarte/intuitver way of doing this is that if you double press the same 'command + 1' and then that would first switch to the inbox and then scoll to the top.  Just a thought

Am I the only who find this frustrating? Allow me to explain.

Every time you do a search (option command f), your inbox goes away and the filtered list appears. Of course that is expected. Now, what if you are done with the search, what do you do? Right now, I have to:

    1) click the cross in the search bar

    2) click the inbox email list to give it focus

    3) fn + arrow up to go to the top of the inbox (alternatively click on the grey bar at the top)

Really Apple? 3 steps just to see my new email? I do roughly 50 searches a day on average so that means there are 150 redudent actions a day.

Ideal case: someone write a program or script so that I can click a keyboard shortcut after a search and everything returns to the 'defaut state' - inbox view with the top position.

Could you clarify? What "bar" at the top of the inbox are you referring to? Where exactly do you click?

    Thanks.

Click on the grey bar that says "Sort by date".

Simply doesn't work for me. Nothing happens at all. (ML, MacBook Air).   And the fn + left arrow just does a quick scroll, not a "snap back".

Scratch that. There was a glitch. Clicking the "sort by" bar in ML now works for me . Thanks all.

yes works for jumping to messages in inbox however if you got a 100 messages in 1 thread then you need to use something like touchup to quickly jump to the latest message.
