Get this error whenever I launch Messages in Mountain Lion. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Dave

An internal Messages error occured.

There was a problem with Messages. You need to quit and open Messages again.

    HI,

Go to Applications/Utilities and launch Activity Monitor.

Find the imagent item and highlight it

Then use the Quit button top left and then confirm Force Quit.

    Restart Messages

Just remove Sophos from your system.

I too have this error everytime I reboot my system. Now, messages dont have this kind of error anymore.

    Hi Ralph (or anyone),

    iMac 27", 10.8.2

I'm still having the Messages error message at launch problem as described above. I have reset the PRAM, quit imagent in Activity Monitor and I do not have Sophos installed. Any other advise to eliminate this pesky problem...

    Thanks, Dave

    Hi,

At the Original Posting date Sophos may not have been updated for Mountain Lion which in turn may have had issues with some apps but I have seen nothing since this thread had that info posted.

I take it you have tried the Force Quit of IMAgent via the Activity Monitor ?

Do you have another Mac Use Account on your Mac you could log in to ?

Does this have issues launching the Messages App ?

    Hi Ralph,

Yes I have quite the IMAgent in Activity Monitor and reset the PRAM. Messages will launch after I have quit and relaunch with no problem.

Where I get the issue is after I log out and the computer sleeps in the logged out condition over night. I have Messages and a couple other apps as startup items and I get the issue when I log back in and these apps are starting up.

Strange that it will not repeat in another user account on this computer and it won't repeat on restart.

    Thanks for your thoughts....

    Hi,

Does the other Mac User account also have it set up as a Start Up item ?

There is sort of "Known Issue" regarding some internet able apps and  Sleep.

When the computer is  Woken then the apps can start up faster than the Computer can re-establish a network.

This can also happen if it is a Start Up item on computer Launch.

I am not sure though this is what you are describing.

You seem to be saying your Quit the App at night bit allow the computer to Sleep rather than doing a Shut Down.

The Wake process seems to restart the app as far as I can tell  from what you are saying.

    Hi Ralph,

I set the other user up the same with Messages as a startup item. Could not replicate.

I log out and put the computer to sleep from the login screen.

Based on what you suspect, I have taken Messages out of the startup items (yesterday) and after I logged in today and launched Messages from the dock there was no error message. So I guess I will keep it this way for now.

Strange that I had iChat launching this way for years with no problems.

    Thanks for your thoughts.....

    HI,

It may be that a restart and then re-adding the Messages app as a Log in item may sort this.
