I have had intermittent problems with Facetime, iMessage & Mail on a new iPad 2 wifi only with iOS 6 the downside is they don't work most of the time, then they do for no apparent reason. I have tried
- rebooting in all the various different ways
- loging in and out of facetime and rebooting in various combos
- turning imessage on/off and rebooting in various combos
- turning the subject field on and off and rebooting etc
- resetting the wireless network settings
- using the Google DNS setting
Short of throwing it against a wall when my 13 year old cheerfully told me I must be doing something wrong and to let her try, I've tried everything Google can throw up.
I thought that there must be a vengeful God who had listened to me discussing the potential of the Windows 8/Mobile/Surface compatibility potential and spoke to my dearest saying 'Go buy an iPad, it's just what he wants'.!!
However, last night while we were trying to get iPhone 4S to talk to iPad 2 across a distance of two feet by a lucky coincidence we tried the iphone option of resending a message as an email. Initially to no avail, then the message would appear when I manually opened the email app or navigated to it once open.
Checking the settings I had 'Push' turned on, more Googleing revelas there is yet another issue (eat your heart out Microsoft) with iCloud and 'Push'. Verified the problem by sending repeated emails to combinations of open and closed mail apps, rebooting etc.
Turned push off, and then back on and lo and behold mail poured from the skies, Facetime and iMessage start working.
Validated the approach with a reboot and mail not working on reboot, iMessage and Facetime not working again. Push off and on and hey presto.
In hindsight this is what happened on day 1, after hours of assuming that Apple products aren't simple and straightforward out of the box and the answer must lie in a discussionn forum somewhere I think we must have decided to try the mail app. No sooner had we got mail working than Facetime and iMessage were working too. Just didn't connect the events at the time.

The exact same problem I am having. I have done everything Apple told me to do plus more on my own, when others have posted here on tips and help. NOTHING!!!!!!! I finally got an iPhone, iMessage works no problem there. My iPad even shows the messages that I have received. But on my iPad I still cannot reply. This is ridiculous. You pay good money for a product that works for ****! And after the IOS 6 update its even worse. I know for a fact its not my internet or wifi problems. Since pretty much everything else connected to wifi or hard wired works with no problems.
Even before the update it only worked when it wanted too. I am just fed up!!!! Least my ticket number hasn't been closed, cuz I will be calling them back and one way or another they are going to fix this!!!!!

I'm having the same issue... Using iOS 6.0.1 & one night I was having a very lengthy iMessage chat & the the next day, nothing! It's been down for me for the last 2days! I hope that they fix this issue soon! It's extremely frustrating!

Putting in my two cents too that my iMessage does not always work on my iPad 2. I sure hope they fix this, cause I don't want to spend $19.99 on a help call. I am not that technical. Just please fix this.

Apple owes me at least a case of wine and a week at a spa. Not sure if I ever want another apple product. Upgraded to 6.0.1 and all 3 of our devices are now full of issues. My iphone 4s (that I only bought so I could imeesagge my daughter in her ipod I reallty wanted a droid) doesn't work if wi-fi is on. 1/2 the apps won't work. My daughter can't use imessage, face time or post to instagram. I turned off my router security and that didn't help. FIX THIS APPLE!!!!!!! We had no problems prior to the upgrade. My apples are rotten and full of worms! My daughter will be getting a phone in the next 6 months and wondering if I should dump my iphone 4s and get her an android as well. GIVE ME A REASON WHY I SHOULD KEEP APPLE PRODUCTS. I am less than impressed. Oh and I did a restore, have reset refreshed, blah blah blah

We haven't upgraded Ipad 3 or Iphone 4s from 6.0 to 6.01 and 2-Ipad 1s still at 5. We are using Imessage daily with all and have since available. Appears to be upgrade from 6.0 doesn't it? Glad I never got around to it. Guessing new devices came with that IOS though.

Can anyone help me,
I want to use my iMessage on my iPad aswel as my iPhone, but it doesn't seem to work...my apple ID is correct and all that. It goes through to the stage where you check what you can be contacted on via iMessage...then it just goes back to the main menu.
Please help me!!!!

I am having a similar problem. I can send text through iMessage but no photos will go through using wi-fi. I am very upset since I bought iPod touches for all of my grandchildren. They can send me pics but I can't send any to them. I have an iPad 3 and have upgraded the iOS to 6. Any help?

The two things that worked for me were,
On the main set up screen, go to the message tab on the right hand side, open message, then turn off the "show subject field".
Then I changed my DNS address to 126.96.36.199 in the settings and then de-activated and activated iMessages on the iPad once again....and I have had no more problems. I have iPad 3 and running ios6.

I had this problem (message not delivered) after upgrading my iPad 3 to iOS 6.1. It went away after I renewed my DHCP lease and turned iMessage off and back on again. I already had the Google DNS servers--I think they're set up on the router itself.

Already had subject line off, turned Message on and off again.
Two questions. My "Message" doesn't say "iMessage". Does this mean I have iPad 2? I'm not sure where to check. I'm running iOS 6.1.
Also when I search for my contacts name from the contact list, it come out RED with an exclamation mark. Has anyone else had that problem? What does that mean?

Since upgrading to 6.1 I cannot send or receive messages at work until I send a message to an iPhone that is physically close to me...less than 2 feet away. Once that initial exchange happens I can send and receive from anyone. There have been no changes to my network or firewall. I have tried all of the following
Reset network settings
Forget and rejoin network
Use google dns settings
Remove and add email addresses and re validate
Turn messages on and off
Nothing except sending or receiving to or from a nearby device works.
Does anyone have any ideas??
