- Back up your existing system if you want to preserve it.
- Boot from your Mac's original System Install DVD, if it came with one, or OS X Recovery, if it did not.
- At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Disk Utility and erase the disk.
- Quit Disk Utility.
- Install OS X and reconfigure your Mac.

The method you have been given will leave your data still exposed to recovery software. See this article
But don't use 7 pass erase, which will be overkill and take forever. One pass zero is quite adequate.
