I just got a new mac and I have all my pictures and other documents on an external harddrive. How do I transfer all of the items on my external harddrive onto my new macbook pro?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Just connect the drive and drag them from the external to the appropriate place in your home folder.

For pictures, if you are going to use iPhoto, open iPhoto and select Import into Library from the file menu and point it to the external.

If you have pictures organized in folders, and you want to keep those as albums in iPhoto, drag the folders into the album list in iPhoto. That will import the photos and organize them into that album.
