Updated iTunes on my laptop (lenovo T60 running XP) to 11.0.1.12. Plugged in phone to update from 6.0.2 to 6.1. Fails Here are my steps at finding the issue and fixing it.

reboot computer

open up network connection

open computer mangement/ device manager to verify Apple Mobile Device USB Driver loads

plug in iphone

Apple Mobile Device USB driver loads fine

Start up iTunes

it asks to restore phone

Click restore

After Extracting Software when it says it is "Preparing iPhone for Restore", i hear 2 beeps as the phones connection to the computer is lost

then 1 of 2 things happen, either

1) 2 beeps as a device is found "Apple Mobile Device (recovery Mode)"

then "Apple Recovery (Boot) USB Driver" appears

Then the window tells me that a problem was found with a new device and the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver shows up with a yellow exclamation mark in the device manager

or 2) i hear 3 beeps and the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in the Device Manager shows up with a yellow exclamation mark and no mention of a device found

Either way, the restore fails with the unknown error 1604

Next step is to uninstall all apple programs and reinstall iTunes 11.0.1.12

Unistalled

Apple Application Support

Apple Mobile Device Support

Apple Software Update Support

Bonjour

iTunes

Quicktime

Looked in \Program Files and deleted the related folders as well as deleting the Apple Folder in \Common Files

rebooted

Ran iTunes Setup for iTunes 11.0.1.12

after install, iTunes loads up.

I reboot

connect to the internet

open device manager

plug in phone

iTunes loads and sees that I have connected a device in recovery mode, wants me to restore it, I say ok

iTunes extracts software, verifies update with Apple, as it is Preparing phone for resore, the phone appears to reboot and

the AMD USB Driver can not re-establish the connection. It is now showing with the yellow exclamation mark in the device manager.

Time for bed.  Hoping one of you can help me figure this out. I am on the road for a few more days and cant really swing by an Apple store. Dont think they have 18 wheeler parking.

At the top I meant to say that these are my attempts at fixing the issue.

Since you already have iOS 6.0.1 on your phone why not just update the iOS over Wi-Fi without connecting it to your computer?

Settings > General > Software Update

Cant. My phone is stuck. Either a black screen or the USB cord pointing to itunes icon. Nothing else works on it.

It really seems to be tied in with the AMD driver. After a reboot of my laptop, my phone connects fine. iTunes boots up and wants to run a restore and the AMD driver looks fine in the device manager. But during the restore process, my phone reboots and can not reconnect to my laptop. At this point the device manager shows the AMD driver with a yellow exclamation mark on it. The same thing happens if I just unplug the phone with out running the restore process.

And once the yellow exclamation mark shows up, nothing i do except for rebooting my laptop makes the driver okay. Looking at the properties for the driver i get the error, "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)"

Went into regedit and found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8 056-444553540000}\

In there I have found in folders 40 and 41 Apple Recovery (iBoot) USB drivers with a date of 9-25-2012 that have identical info in them

Folder 37 is the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver with a date of 9-25-2012.

Folder 35 and 36  another Apple Recovery (iBoot) Driver with a date of 7-12-2011

Folder 34 contains the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver with a date of 7-12-2011

Going to uninstall, check regedit again to see if they are in there. If I see anything i will back up the keys and delete them, then reinstall everything again, then check regedit again.

    Hello,

i just noticed that i have a similar issue with my iphone5 and ipad 2. it started before i updated both to 6.1 though. i cant really tell when exactly, it might possibly have happeed in conjunction with upgrade to itunes 11 wich was about a week ago i think. Did you manage to solve the problem?

what i noticed though is, that both of the devices show weird behaviour with the usb. I actually blamed it on my usb first when i noticed this. Both devices show usual behaviour when connected to the usb during startup. iphone starts charging, ipad says "not charging". At some point during startup while windows 7 is loading, both go back to normal mode and behave as if not connected at all.

If i connect or diconnect them Windows gives its sounds though with an error: Windows the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in both cases says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Once the IPhone managed to make its way into ITunes on one of my 3 usb plugs, but when i tried to backup it just disappeared again.

It would be great if there was a simple solution like reinstalling just that driver? I couldnt find it yet

I used to just go amok with regedit to delete everything itunes after the uninstall of itunes and

when every single entry related was gon I'd reinstall it
