I accidently overwrote a tiff file and now I want the original tiff back.
Where are your original master image files located? Are they managed inside your Aperture library or referenced?
You have two options, depending on how much free diskspace you have.
- Restore your old library from the vault and then export the tiff to import it into your current library. To restore the vault create a new, empty library with File > Switch to Library > Other/new (if you you do not want to replace your current library by the restored version), then double click the vault. This will replace the new, empty library by the restored version.
- Retrieve the missing tiff from your TimeMachine backup:
- If your originals are referenced, open the folder that should contain the missing tiff-original in the Finder and keep this the front-most Finder window. Then enter TimeMachine, and in the TimeTunnel dive back to a time, when the tiff was o.k. select it and click "Restore to ..".
- If your originals are managed, ctrl-click the Aperture library package and use "Show Package Contents", then locate the folder where the original tiff file should be in the "Masters" folder. This folder is organized by "Import Session". Go to the year/month/day folder when you imported the image. With this folder open dive into TimeMachine and restore.

How you do this also depends on if you are just interested in the original file or if you want the file as it appeared in Aperture wit any metadata added and adjustments do to it.
If you don;t care for anything other then the tiff file then you can retrieve the file from the Aperture library package as Léonie wrote.
However if you want the image as it was in Aperture you will need to restore the library.

Thank you both VERY much. I since I had space on my drive, I just created a new library and restored from the vault. Seemed like a bit of a pain for one image, but it worked, and that's what matters. I did find i curious that I was unable to locate the file within the time machine back ups. In fact, when I did a search for the file, only the jpeg version showed up, no tiff. oh well, the vault did it's job. thanks again.
