I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running 10.8.2 wuth 4GB RAM. The lower USB in the front is not working. If I plug in my iPhone nothing happens. If I plug in my portable USB drive, it (the drive lights) lights up for a few seconds but then goes dark and it never mounts. Both devices work fine in the upper port. I've shut down and restarted with all other devices disonnected. I've reset the PRAM. I've run Disk Utility and mades sure all updates are installed. Under System Report the USB Device Tree shows 5 USB devices. Would appreciated any suggestions.

G5, Mac OS X (10.5.8), G5

That sounds to me like that USB port has been physically damaged.

Good thing you have others, and can also use a powered USB Hub.
