Did You disconnect it from the iMac? If it is connected to the iMac, it can't connect to an other Device, because of the Keyboard can not know, on wich Device the Letters should be shown.

For people who actually want directions, instead of quick replies:
(OS X Snow Leopard)
Go into System Preferences on your iMac, choose Bluetooth in the Internet and Wireless section.
Find the keyboard and select it in the column on the left
Keep it paired, but uncheck the box "on", and leave the box "discoverable" checked.
Now put the keyboard in the vicinity of the iPad
in iOS 6, Go into settings>Bluetooth and turn it on
Turn on your bluetooth keyboard. If it is the one that came with your 2009 iMac, you need to hold the "on" button on the right end of the tube for about 5 seconds and it should show up in the devices list under Bluetooth. ( a little green light appears on the face of the keyboard near the button).
Now click on the name of the keyboard and it should open a window asking you to type in the keyboard numeric code.
If it works, it should tell you it is "paired".
Please everyone, give complete instructions. That means you too Apple.
