This battery drain issue happened a few updates ago with Mac OSX laptops.  Took them two updates to fix it.  Then and now, seems like something pre-release testing should have caught.

As much as I love my iPhone 5,but I am afraid I am gonna have to return it. I use email pretty often and I am on call all the time,I can't be looking for outlets in every single hospital and clinic that I go.

That only resets the settings not your data. Do NOT select erase all content.  Just the 'Reset All settings'  option. Also you cannot go back to a prior iOS. Apple does not allow that.  Just follow the process as its written. Of course always get a backup to iTunes or iCloud just for safe measures. You will have to go through and set your settings back up and wallpaper and any wifi networks. Turn off the items you don't need etc.

Okay, I am thinking about trying this.  Will doing Step 2 have any effect on text messages, pictures etc?

It seems like, if Apple is working on any issues and will offer another update, it might make sense just to restore my phone back to prior to updating to the latest software?

I know I will have that annoying reminder telling me to update, and I probably won't benefit from whatever things they added to 6.1, but if it would save my battery life, it's worth considering I think.

I am without a battery problem on my iPhone 5. It was bought unlocked from an Apple retail store and is used with a Straight Talk SIM, so LTE is off since it's not available on the Straight Talk AT&T MVNO. It originally came with iOS 6.0.1, I skipped 6.0.2, because of all the battery problems reported by others, then updated to iOS 6.1 when it was released.

No doubt many are having the same issue, but it may be helpful to know not all iPhone 5's suffer from the rapidly diminishing battery problem.

I'll test it again after a complete reinstall and also noticed I didn't have a verizon firmware update. How are we supposed to know about the verizon update when setting > general > update says ok, but plugged into itunes and clicking update says a verizon firmware is available.

Anyway, I'll have it all now and will report back if better.

I did everything you said to do, the problem keeps ........ what does my battery drain is LTE, LTE When is on, the battery drains completely in just a few hours, when LTE is turned off, the iphone works perfectly well!.
What can I do to resolve this situation?

Maybe the complete reinstall helped. Instead of losing 5% overnight, I am still 100% now. Maybe whatever was churning has stopped. I take back my prior post about 6.1 being a problem.

Tried the steps suggested by sbaily4  but that did not work for me, unfortunately. Will now try the restore thru iTunes.

The battery drain issue is related to excessive interaction with MS Exchange server (email and contacts).  I have an ATT iPhone 5 that I upgraded to 6.1 and immediately had power issues.  I was able to resolve the battery drain issues after i deleted my MS Exchange email account and then reinstalled it an hour later.

    Hope that helps.

It isn't though.  I don't even use Exchange and I have had battery drain issues since upgrading to 6.1.

ok, seems that the restore to factory settings is working for me. Now the battery holds but I have a 'empty' phone. What is the next step ? Syncing ? or recover from back-up ? What is the difference anyway ? Will I get all my apps and data back in both cases ?

The issue seems to rear its head when you try to book or make changes to a recurring appointment on a Microsoft Exchange server. It makes our log files grow exponentially which tells me there is incessant comminication going on between the server and handset. I can duplicate the issue. What we are recommending is that iPhone, iPad users delete their Exchange account and set up email using IMAP. That way you will still get email. Obviously the calendars won't sync but thats what we get for using Exchange instead of something that works like Gmail :).  I am trying writing a patch right now for our Activesync stuff. Will let you know if it works.

but I am not using exchange accounts or server (but Gmail) !

Or am I missing something ?

Kristel, can you do a couple of things and let me know what happens: (1) can you disable push (if you have it enabled) and set it to fetch every 15-30 minutes or so.  Does that improve your battery life?  After that (2) can you disable calendar sync and reboot your phone?  Does that improve your battery life?
