I have the same problem with my Apple TV 3 and my iPhone 4S and the mirroring option is not there!?!?

Make sure both devices are fully up to date (settings > general > software update). Also, both devices need to be connected to the same network (via ethernet or wireless). On the Apple TV, go to settings > airplay > and turn airplay on if it is not already. On your iPhone, double tap the home button (the only button just below the screen), this will then show a row of your active applications > swipe your finger to the right on this row TWICE. You should then see the airplay icon. Tap the airplay icon, select your Apple TV, and turn the airplay mirroring switch to "on".

I have checked to be sure both devices are updated, several times. Both are connected to same network, AirPlay is turned on for both devices and yes I swipe to get to the option and iPhone and AppleTV both show up but not the mirroring option?

Ok never mind. I dug out the box for my phone and its a 4. Not 4S. This whole time I
thought I had an iphone4S. Now I'm sad. Oh well at least I know why the mirroring option is not available. Lame for me was excited to try it out. Thanx to Apple for the great products. Luv my AppleTV!
