Q: Ethernet Port

My Ethernet port has stopped working. We had some strong winds and my ethernet cable spans accross from a shed to the house. I have my laptop plugged in and it works fine, but when i plug my ethernet cable (cat5e) in, it says the network cable is unplugged.

I ran an AHT and nothing came up as an error, i have done a PRAM reset also.

ANY IDEAS?

I have an imac 24 in early 2009 with 4gb RAM running 10.5.8

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), Mac OS X (10.5.8)

    Hi Joan,

Another thing that can make the Etherenet say not connect is the port being fried, was there any electrical storms at the time?

    Long shot, but...

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

No storms, just strong wind. I booted in safe mode and then restarted it and the port worked for a whole day and the. When I turns the computer back on the next day. No good. I'm just doing another AHT but an extensive one and the. I'll do 3 pram resets in a row.

    Thanks

Nope. No go on the pram resets. I think I might just have to get a wireless repeater or something likes that. My wireless works fine..

AHT may not report any errors, it may just skip a HW test if it doesn't see the device.

I've noticed that my airport works intermittently too. I reset the computer and it works again but the ethernet doesn't... does this sound like my logic board is broken?

    Thanks

Maybe, but one more thing to try...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

    10.4 instructions...

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.

    If using Wifi/Airport...

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Click OK.

Done. It connects alright, but there is no internet connection. I can connect via WIFI on my Iphone so i know there is no problem with the way its sending the signal.

Surely the AHT would pickup if there was an issue with the logic board?

    Any other ideas? Im STUCK!

AHT doesn't pick up a lot of things, just usually skips that test say if it can't find it.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

    Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

Ok. So I created a new log in, but I realized my wifi started working again anyway, so there was no was to test if that was the issue. As for the safe mode boot...

Both repairs ran in safe and normal boot. Wifi seems to be working fine for the moment but no luck on the Ethernet.

I couldn't see any of those files but I don't know how to see hidden files

Did Ethernet show up/work in Safe Mode?

Could the outside Ethernet cable have been damaged? Did you restart the Modem or Router out there?

What type of service do you have cable, DSL. other?  Where is the access point for the connection?  What does the modem (cable or DSL or? ) show on its indicator lights.

If you get a new Ethernet cable and go to the modem and plug your computer right into the modem what happens?
