There are currently no unlocked iPhones 5's available in the US. Apple has not announced when they will be available.

They may, but until the announce it there is no certanty.
The iPhone will work on any GSM network for EDGE and 3G service. It will work on compatible LTE networks... but LTE networks in the US use different bandwidths than those in other countries.

When you calculate your price comparison, be sure to include the sales tax charged in almost every place in the US, which can be above 8%, and the VAT you'll almost certainly have to pay when you receive the iPhone, which I believe is 25% in Sweden, along with possible import duties. That and the fact that you won't get any warranty support in Sweden and would have to send the iPhone to your cousins to take or send to Apple, should the iPhone need service, may make what you are proposing less attactive.

No, it does not. You're looking at the subsidized price, where the carrier pays part of the cost in advance in return for the user signing a two-year contract with the carrier.
