I bought a macbook pro retina in august. recently i had started to notice problems such as the usb ports weren't working, and my display had white mura spots. i turned it in for a repair, and they replaced the display and logic board. the display looks great, but now my macbook frequently freezes. it happens with any program, when i use safari and itunes together usually if i minimize one of the windows it will freeze. i have a few heavier programs such as sims 3 or logic pro but they don't freeze any more frequently than other programs and were installed after the freezing had already started so i don't think that's the problem. when it freezes i can't do anything but move the mouse, force quit never opens at all and i have to completely restart it. i'm using about 160 gb but still have over 80 gb available on my hard drive. my system has 16 gb ram and i have no page outs under my activity monitor. any suggestions on how to fix this? trying to avoid doing another repair because i go back to school this weekend and i don't want to be without my computer.

Have you tried resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)?

    If not, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Also, try resetting the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

If neither of these work, you should probably take it back for another check.

I have done both of those, and even taken the computer in for a repair and the problem still hasn't been resolved. Any ideas? The apple store did a full system erase and reinstalled the software, and I'm still having freezing problems. After playing around on programs more, I have noticed that when I'm only using safari or itunes it's rarer for my computer to freeze (it still happens, just not as often). I have recently noticed that connecting my mac to my tv using a HDMI cord often causes instant freezes, and while I didn't think so before, it does seem that Sims 3 and Logic cause almost constant freezing too. Is it possible that this could be a graphics card issue or something like that? It seems weird to me that a computer with such high specs can still freeze playing a Sims 3 game or having a few safari tabs open while playing a song on itunes. I'm at a loss since I've now sent it in for two repairs and still haven't resolved the issue.

Try running the Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

If it finds a problem, take a pic and take it into the Apple Store and show them the photo.

It's likely that you need a logic board replacement. Take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP, actually demonstrate to them what's happening, and insist on your machine being repaired - even if you have to go up the food chain to the store manager or Apple Customer Relations. Something on you new computer is faulty and if two trips to the service depot didn't fix the problem, make a third trip and be persistent.

    Good luck,

i've had a logic board replacement before i started experiencing this issue, do you know if apple replaces logic boards with brand new ones or do you think it's possible they gave me a faulty logic board with the first repair? when i took it in the second time, they ran hardware diagnostic tests and said they couldn't find any hardware issues, which is why they erased the computer and reinstalled the software.

i ran the apple hardware test, no problems were found. i've verified disk permissions and verified the hard drive, no problems there either. is this just a normal thing with macs? i've only had windows computers before and i remember getting a lot of freezing but i thought a mac with 16 gb ram would be less prone to freezing and crashing.

I'd still take the machine back to the Apple Store - you may need yet another logic board replacement. Only the Apple techs have diagnostic software unavailable to we mere mortals and the AHT test doesn't catch everything.

Good luck - a new machine should be flawless in operation. Yours isn't. There's something wrong.

Thanks everyone! After 2 more repairs I finally have a working Macbook. It did end up being a logic board issue as expected. Strangely enough, even after all of apple's tests it still showed I had a working logic board and graphics card, they went ahead and replaced it anyways and it did the trick.
