In that case, Migration Assistant will be useful for you if you want to reinstall applications from your old Mac onto the new Mac. Create a Time Machine backup onto the external disk, and use Migration Assistant on your new Mac to restore it
If you only want to transfer files and data from your old Mac, you can use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make a clone onto an external disk, so when you connect it to your new Mac, you will be able to transfer only the files you need. This method won't transfer anything that you don't want, because Migration Assistant may transfer waste files from your old computer.
