Using Disk Utility to erase drive fails with

disk erase failed.jpg

How can I reformat this drive?

Thanks

Mac Pro (Early 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

A simple erase (leave the data blocks alone) should work fine.

Exactly what a drive does when you select various ( Security Erase ) features may be different with each drive.

I suspect you have selected an option that your enclosure or drive does not understand. If you want a security Erase, you could move the drive to an internal bay, or endure the 7-pass random data (that takes seven times as long with no additional benefit for most data).

    Thanks, Grant.  But you misunderstand.

The erase is set at simple. I don't need or use any of the security erase options.

The failure shown occurs before any erasing begins.

The same failure occurs when I try to partition the drive.

    That's pretty weird.

What is on the drive for partitions? Is it NTFS formatted? Is it Read-only?

What size is this drive? Over 2.2TB? Has it always been in this enclosure?

Single partition. Mac OS Extended (Journaled). 1 TB. Read/write. Always in current enclosure. Currently unmounted.

Are you in the Partition tab in Disk Utility or not?

I would never use the "erase free space" but that sounds like what you might be doing.

If you click on a volume name you are not initializing (or formatting).

Apple is using "erase" to mean more than one thing.

If you click on the raw drive name such as WDAAKS or something and click Erase that does check the first and last 1M sestors to insure the hidden partition areas are safe to use and creates all new partition table.

If you click on Change to the number of partitions you can also double check that you are using GUID. You can still set it to one or more user partitions after you Apply.

Very handy to create more than one partition and I like to reformat / initialize drives on a regjular basis, plus with any new OS or changes to the underlying IO rout ines.

Drive cases from some vendors, and any FW case has to have a bridge and firmware, have been known to stop working with a new OS (like WD or LaCie, but not OWC) most common bridge I think are Oxford but that has changed from 92x through many revisions.

What is t he make and model ?  it matters in such "cases." Both the drive vendor and drive case.

Now a check for drive failure:

A drive that cannot report BOTH:

    1) its Make&Model and a

    2) resonable non-Zero Size/Capacity...

... has failed, and cannot be repaired by any software means in its current configuration.

I hope this addresses all current coments and questions.

The product is a miniStack v3 from OWC. It's always been in that enclosure.

The following screen caps show more info, and the current state of affairs.

Drive is mounted, cannot be unmounted to erase. Excuse multiples of same image.

    Will try again.

In each of your examples, you have selected the Volume.

Please select the next level UP the heirarchy, the Hardware_name, "1TB newer technology, Inc" and post a screenshot of that.

    Okay.

It is intersting that you also have two other similar enclosures.

Do either of those have the same connection-ID?

If you disconnect the other two newer technologies drives and restart, does the First Aid or Erase screen look any different?

    Grant,

The three drives' Connection IDs are unique.

The three drives functioned trouble free before this happened. Why should the problem involve the other two now?

I've done as you asked, and attached the screen caps.

Well, this is one for the books. I powered off External 2 by mistake,

and got the admonition. Closed that, powered up all three drives.

For the heck of it, I tried Repair again, and got this:
