I switched to mac for the same reasons you mention, Potential_Mac_User.  I was about to give up on my quest to go mac after returning my first rMBP due to brutal IR but I culdn't let go of the mac dream... so I gambled on a refurbished rMBP and won the Samsung screen lottery!  Going on a month, and so far I feel like I got the flawless, high-performance computer I paid for!  I am also using the magic mouse: it took about a week to get used to the low profile design but now I beginning to really appreciate it.

That's strange.  When I type in the command, I get:

    Color LCD

    LSN154YL01001

    DLM229500NQF49GAU

I've never seen that one before.

My one and a half month old rMBP with LG display is beginning to show IR during everyday usage. After using iTunes for a couple of minutes, I could clearly see IR of the album artwork on my desktop background (default Galaxy wallpaper). I am beginning to think that all LG displays exhibit IR at somepoint. The IR doesn't bother me at all though, and I would still take an LG over a Samsung display. I have compared both LG and Samsung displays and the LG definitely had more accurate color reproduction. I am definitely going to hold onto my current rMBP.

That's interesting. I've had mine 3 weeks and still have 1 week before the return window expires. I've been weighing what to do if and when I see evidence of IR. I'm encouraged by your reaction since I really love the system but I'm still a little worried that if it is inevitible it will get progressively worse until you can't tolerate it. I suppose you just cart it over to Apple and get it replaced. I'm curious, are you a heavy user? Do you average a lot of hours every day?

I saw this board before I bought my refurbished rMBP. One of the first things I did was check out the panel—an LG. It has image retention, which I was expecting to be terrible—people were taking back their 80th replacement model or whatever—but it wasn't a big deal at all to me, even for photo editing. It goes away after a while… not like the golf channel logo on my parents' plasma TV. Actually, the LCD I previously had, for editing photos, was this wonderful Dell 20 inch; it also had image retention, but it was much more noticable on that than on this rMBP, and even that didn't bug me, including when editing photos. I have had that Dell monitor for 8 years.

I know my sample size of 1 on this board of 7000 posts might go unnoticed, or seem too small to pull from—and it is too small to base a decision on, don't get me wrong—but I came on this board to say it's not a big deal to me.

My rMBP also has this other slight issue that bugs some people like crazy: it has a squeaky, metal-on-metal noise when pressed in a certain way on the bottom, or held a certain way. It doesn't bug me at all, but I read one comment that a person said they were on the verge of getting rid of it to buy a Windows-based HP laptop.

I'm basically trying to give you the self-defeating advice of not listening to the opinions of people on message boards, as they might find some things that are a minor nuisance to be extremely terrible; likewise, some things I find extremely terrible—like the way Exposé changed in 10.6—are things that others might see as trivial. The internet is full of polarized opinions, and, on average, people are also biased when handling information based on the order of information and its delivery Put the two of those things together, and it seems to follow that people might come to rash conclusions or action plans when reading message boards.

Some people don't mind being ripped off and will accept whatever they're sold rather than deal with confrontation but others do mind, and understand when they've been ripped off and don't want to accept it. If you have the kind of image retention that these rmbp's have, you've been ripped off and no rationalizing will change that.

I use it maybe 4-5 hours per day and I have no IR at all.

Could you please post your device information (check the link I posted in the previous page)?

    Hi Crow,

Only time will tell if the IR will get progressively worse. As of now, I do not see the IR being a problem as it fades after a minute or two. I am a university student so I use the rMBP a lot (Adobe CS6, term papers, etc.). The IR only comes up if I leave an image static for around 10 or so minutes.

After reading this post i almost gave up buying this laptop. But i did and i am very happpy. I have an LG display with IR but i know this only because i tested it. Never ever i have seen it in real life scenarios. If even i will be able to see it once a month for a minute or so it will still not be a problem. Other people have real lif problems like cancer or down sindrome. Other than that this laptop is amazing. Very light and the performance is top notch. It's a pleasure to use and i love it. Replaced my formal laptop, my desktop and my ipad. I just want to point out that this is not such a big problem some people with OCD have here. It's expensive but it has the best screen, a quad core i7 and a 650M which is more than capable to run games. The form factor is superb and it's lightness almost makes me to pick it up. Expensive was my last laptop, an Asus that had issues far worse than this one. I have also used for my laptops aggresive times for the screen like 4-5 minutes till automatic turn-off.

Display Identifier 2 IS OUT! Download it here!

The new and much improved version of my Display Identifier app to quickly check your screen manufacturer has been released.

It's basically for those of you who are new to Mac/UNIX and don't feel comfortable messing around with command line interfaces, or just don't want to type it all out in Terminal every time or memorize the ioreg command.

(If you still have Display Identifier v1, v1.1.1, or v1.2 on your machine, keeping it there won't affect v2. However, I advise you uninstall v1 purely for simplicity. )

    @shayster98

FYI: your app doesn't seem to be working on my rMBP 15 (OSX 10.8.2).  I followed all your setting adjustments and the app starts but locks up, the gear wheel in menu bar stalls on Applescript 3/5 and an error message pops up:
