You can check the system requirements of most software (and certainly all Apple software) by Googling "softwarename system requirements" and following the link.

Thank you! I also realized I could do a chat through the Apple Store. The representitive confirmed Aperture works without having Retina Display. All is well. - Mark

You are welcome.
Aperture is a big ball of wax -- here are some tools to help you shape it to your liking.

Yes but Aperture takes good advantage of RAM so ideally have a minimum of 8 GB RAM on board.
Aperture on my 2011 MBP had no page outs with 8 GB RAM but an Aperture/Photoshop workflow did page out so I upgraded to 16 GB RAM.
Do NOT necessarily believe "System Requirements" from Apple or from Adobe because both firms have misled users for many years. E.g. note that the Apple link Kirby provided suggests 4 GB as the recommended RAM, which is very bad advice.
Note that some newer Macs no longer allow third-party RAM upgrades, a serious downgrade of product utility. I very strongly recommend that folks buying such constrained Macs only choose models with 16 GB RAM.
