I have iPhoto save a copy of all my photos to the library. When I import new pics they get copied (or saved) in the library. In order to save space on my external hard drive, can I delete the photos that are stored on my hard drive and just export the library or copy it to my TC every so often or do I have to keep the photos that come off my phone when I sync or from cameras or discs.

What is your best suggestion. My external HD is 500gig and I am doing a project that is taking a lot of space up and need to figure out a way to save space on my ext HD without buying another one.

Thanks in Advance

    Move the Library.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

    1. Quit iPhoto

    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I boot iPhoto (library is on HDD external) as well as all my pictures except the ones I download off the internet. Those are moved weekly or so.

Why are you downloading images to the internal if you're then going to move them? Why not download them to the external?

Which disk are you trying to make space on?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?

A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package

A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

If you've copied the photos to the the EHD you can delete them from the Downloads folder.

    Safari just defaults that way.

    Change the default folder here:

    Safari001.jpg

If it's a managed Library, then you can.
