Right now, I have Windows 8 installed in a Parallels Virtual Machine. I would like to put that installation on a Boot Camp partition. Is it possible to image the Parallels VM and then restore the image to Boot Camp? I do have a license key for Win 8, but am not sure how to handle the imaging and restoring.

Thanks.

Well, if you have a good backup tool that will allow yout to restore to different hardware, then you might be able to do what you want.  Keep in mind that Windows generally keeps the current hardware configuration/needed device drivers stored in the registry, and uses that to boot your computer. If you restore a backup to different hardware, then you may fail to boot.  If you have high enough quality backup software, it knows how to do a "universal hardware restore" to different hardware and allow Windows to re-detect your hardware at boot time.

What software are you talking about?

While I haven't tried it myself, software like Acronis True Image claims to be able to take an image backup of one computer and restore onto different hardware.  I have seen similar claims from other backup software vendors, but I don't know any of them off the top of my head.

Please try it before posting, you can spoil someones day pretty thoroughly if that advice regarding Acronis is wrong.

Personally I do not believe Acronis (if that is what they say)

I do have Acronis, but have never investigated its ability to restore to different hardware. What about Windows 8's backup software? Or Drive Image XML?

I just did some searching, here is a link to a Parallels forum discussing this very subject.

    Not easy but not impossible.

Sounds doable...I'll give it a try. Thanks!
