Can anyone help diagnose the problem with my iPod?

It's a 60gb iPod video (5th gen).

I started using it with my Audi audio system... So controlling it through the car, not the click wheel.  When I went to disconnect, the screen went all scrambled. Unreadable.

Didn't matter if I wanted to use it in the car since the audio system still recognized it and I could still navigate that way without needing the screen.

Once or twice, the screen would start working again and then get scrambled again.

THEN I went to turn it on and the scrambled screen flashed on (with the backlight) and then shut it self down. Tried to power on again, but never booting up successfully. It does this until the battery runs out, over and over. The sound it makes is whirrrrr click. The click happening when the backlight flashes for a second.

The cycle takes about 20 secs, I'd say, between flashes/clicks,

I tried doing all of the restarts and restores and resets recommended but none work. My computer can't even see the iPod anymore when it is plugged in because it can't boot up that far.

Tried letting the battery run out and charge up. Same result.

I don't know if the screen going is related to it not being able to start up, or if its just an old iPod and a few things went out almost at once.

Anyone have an idea what might be going on? Is the hard drive shot?

Thanks for any thought or advice.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Verizon USB modem UMW190
