How do I upgrade to Mountain Lion from my current system?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), I want to keep all my files safe!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

OS X Mountain Lion needs Mac OS X Snow Leopard at least to upgrade from, so you have to upgrade first to Snow Leopard.

First, see if your Mac is supported > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575 If it's compatible, buy Snow Leopard. Then, make a backup of your data, insert the Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade.

The disc will install Mac OS X 10.6.3, so open  > Software Update to install 10.6.8. After updating to Mac OS X 10.6.8, you will see the App Store on the Dock, so first check if your Mac is supported > http://www.apple.com/osx/specs If it's supported, just open App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. When the download finishes, the Mountain Lion installer will show up, so follow the steps to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

    You need Snow Leopard first

Purcahse the install DVD from Apple for Snow Leopard

    Upgrade to it

    Then update to 10.6.8

That will give the App Store where you can purchase Mountain Lion
