Hello All,

Am hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I am looking to capture a bunch of videos for a friend and I am using a Sony Video-8 camcorder which goes through a Canopus ADVC-100 and then firewire into my Mac Pro. I am using the lates version of iMovie (with all application and OS updates applied) but every so often during capture, iMovie will crash on me which is somewhat inconvenient to put it mildly! - Just FYI, I am capturing to an external Seagate drive which is connected via USB 2.0 and actually spins at 5400rpm. Could this be the issue but if so, then why would it not consistently crash on everything I try to capture and at the very begining and not an hour plus into the capture?

Question I have, is whether there is something that I should be looking at to prevent this from happening, or is there a more robust simple application for me to be able to simply capture the video to a .DV file? I don't actually need to do anything in iMove such as effects, chapters, etc. as I simply want to capture DV and then using another tool to export to another video format.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Vin.

Very possibly the answer. It is coming in at firewire speed, but leaves your Mac only at USB2 speed, and chokes.

Have you got space to save it in iMovie on your internal hard drive and then save the project to the external?

Yes - Not for all the captures which is why I was using the external drive but I can give that a go and just deal with the added management of moving the projects a few at a time if it means it won't crash on me...

Failing that, I remember a few years back there used to be some lightweight video capture tools that did nothing but allow you to capture video from a firewire device straight to your hard drive - does anyone remember what those tools were as I would love to have that as a plan B if needed....

    Thanks!

Sorry, didn't get a chance to play with this yesterday but will do this evening. In the meantme, does anyone have any suggestions for another tool which will capture from firewire to .DV or .MOV or some video format of choice?

    Thanks,

A hard drive that connects by firewire.
