It is my humble opinion that whenever things are working right on your iPad, the first thing you do is do a hard reset by holding the Sleep and Hold buttons until you see the Apple Logo. It shouldn't happen very often.
Also, make certain that you do not have tons of apps open. I helped an iPad noob who kept complaining that she had a lemon. When I helped her, she had like 25 apps open. Facebook can eat resources, for example. Keep just a few open, especially crazy games.
