I am using an ipad 3 LTE-4G verison  64gb, with GPS chip.  I down  loaded MOTIOX GPS DRIVE, I have not set up an account, I use this ipad in the house only.

I read that the motionx GPS app would work while driving as long as it has the GPS chip. Cell service not needed.

I decided to try it out today but kept getting a could not connect error. I am trying to figure out how my settings should be. Leave wifi on, and keep cellular data off?

I Did just the opposite, turned off wifi and turned on cellular data, saw 3g at top of screen where wifi signal strength shows.

I did not get a chance to try it out with other settings. I am handicapped and won't be going out for awhile.

Anyone get this app to work with your ipad that has the GPS chip and no cellular account ???

Thank you

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi + Cellular (VZ), iOS 6.0.1

Though you really should contact the developer for these type of questions, my experience with it is that you need to download the maps to use it without cell service. Then it should work perfectly. You do that in Menu>Setup>Map Downloads>Download New Maps. It'll walk you through how to download maps.

Motion X Drive is great, because it does NOT rely upon the cellular network (saving you money, and works in areas with limited cellular reception).

Remember, this Support Community is for the iPad hardware, and you really should contact developers for assistance. I just happen to use the app.

Here's the tutorial on how to install maps:

I'm not sure I know what you mean. If you download the maps, you do not need cellular at all, which means you won't be using any of your data plan. That's the point of downloading the maps.

The WiFi would be irrelevant if you're travelling, because you'd never connect to a WiFi for anything more than a second or two, and I doubt you would even do that because you wouldn't have passwords.

So whether your WiFi is on or off is irrelevant. Turning the Cellular on or off is irrelevant. With the GPS chip running, and the maps loaded, it will be very accurate, maybe up to a few meters.

You're overthinking this problem. The only reason you would need cellular is if you have a program that needs access to the internet to get map data realtime, like google maps or Apple Maps.

Excellent. It's a great app, I've been using it for years for hiking.
