I'm not sure if I should post this in Mountain Lion, Safari, iPhoto or other forum.  The situation also occurs with Chrome, so I am posting here.

How do I set the default folder that I would be uploading files from for Safari or Chrome?

When I am trying to upload photos, the browser always reverts to a folder whose label has name that is approximately 20 digits long.

I'd prefer to have my iPhoto library be the default uploads folder.

Can this be done?

You have to set the default folder for downloads in each browser. In Safari, that setting is in the General tab of the preferences dialog. You very much do not want to download files into an iPhoto library. The library should be modified only from within iPhoto, not in any other way. I suggest you download to the Pictures folder instead. See also:

The Downloads folder can be set in the preferences of most browser applications; however, an upload folder (ie, one you choose files from to upload when prompted from various Web sites), is not possible to set. The browser will likely start at your home folder and show you a standard Open window, which you then navigate through. However, since this is a standard Open window you can drag a preferred folder to the Finder sidebar, where it will then show in the Open window so you can quickly access it.

This will set the "uploads folder" in Safari to your ~/Pictures folder:

    tell application "Safari"

set the source_folder to choose folder default location path to "pdoc"

    end tell

Open the Applescript editor and copy the script above exactly into the window. Click 'compile' and then 'run'.

Thanks.  I'm looking for help with setting the folder that items are uploaded from.

I suggest you add the folder to your Favorites so it will always be easily accessible in an open-file dialog.

The script I posted earlier does what you want. However, from my testing it doesn't survive logout/restart.

Therefore, save the script as an .app and place it in your login items. To do so, go to

 > System Preferences... Users & Groups | Login Items

Click on the '+' sign in the Login Items tab, navigate to where you saved the script and press 'OK'.

If you wish to change it back to default any time in the future, remove the script from the login items and logout/login.

If you wish to change the script to another folder rather than the 'Pictures' folder, you can edit the original script. If you need help figuring out how to name the folder you do want correctly, just post for advice.
