How do I know if an app will work when not connected to wifi. Would like to play games or see a map while in the car traveling. Thanks for any help.

if the apps require a data connection, then it won't work.

Most games allow offline play even if they have an online feature. If your concerned actually spend the time to read the App descriptions before purchasing.

As for maps, look for those that say - again, in the App description- that they allow for OFFLINE mode or the ability to download maps. Both Apple and Google maps are online only. As is Waze.

I use Skrobbler GPS Navigation 2. It is reasonably priced, provides downloadable maps and the UI is very nice and easy to use. Get it here:

Some games are online only, but plenty are not. LIke was suggested, read the descriptions and reviews. Chances are if a game is online only you'll see people expressing their issues with that.

One way to test before you go on the road, put your iPad into airline mode, which turns off the antennas, then see what works.
