Q: ATI Radeon HD 5870 Driver for Mac OS X

I have a 2009 Mac Pro with a default NVidia GeForce GT 120 graphics card AND the ATI Radeon HD 5870 as a additional graphics card which is hooked into my two external monitor.

I had been having non - stop kernel panic, where i was forced to reinstall mountain lion, and still got kernal panic. But i switched my ram slots, and it somehow seems to be stable now, and just finished installing my mountain lion.

Two of my external displays are not detected now, and i have done updating all my software updates for mountain lion. Can't find the driver for MAC for ATI Radeon HD 5870 in google, ati, amd websites as well.

Can someone please provide me the link for mac driver download?

When i had snow leopard, software update made it work. But not now.

Please assist.

I have this graphics card in a 2008 Mac Pro and I am running Mountain Lion.  It is mostly compatible with mine. Sometimes it flashes black and sometimes it doesn't come up correctly when booting.  Other than that it has been great.

Maybe your video card is bad. Is your machine stable when the card is removed?

I don't have apple care. Plus bought this mac on 2009. It's already out of all warranty.

I haven't been able to remove the video card. Plus, as i said, all this started after some software update of snow leopard.

I am not sure if it could be a hardware issue.

What should i do to get apple store guys fix this mac?

    PLEASE HELP I AM FRUSTRATED

Problem still persisted. My mac would just ask me to restart by pushing the power button for long. When i reboot two of my external monitors connected to ATI Radeon 5870HD will not show up. Next day when i boot up it shows up.

I took it to genius bar, and they took their own sweet 5 days to do complete diagnosis. They said it is RAM which was causing the error. My ram was purchased from Ramjet.com and i have called them, and they sent me a new set of 4x4 GB which is 16 GB in total.

I replaced the ram, and started my machine. All three monitors were working for just 10 minutes. Again machine rebooted by itself, and i got only one monitor.

Next day i rebooted all three monitors are working. I sent the log to Ramjet people, and they say it seems like a power supply management issue. They can't see if it's a RAM. Below is my complete last failure log.

I dont even know what part of hardware is causing this issue. But I badly need my mac back, in a stable manner. PLEASE HELP.

When no one has an idea that will help, they generally don't post. You noted earlier that you've reinstalled the OS numerous times. As that hasn't helped - and you also had that "cracking" sound" - I can't help but think you have a hardware issue other than RAM. Needless to say, that's not something anyone can diagnose from here with any type of ease.

What are the upgrade options that i have? If i assume could be the logic board or power supply, are they being sold seperately?

Is there any hardware inside which does power supply management like windows hardware?

Ramjet diagnosis of the log seems to make sense. Since sometime it shows my external monitor and sometimes it don't, seems like a power issue.

And regarding the sound crack, i experienced only once. It could be because song was playing and it went to kernal panic have caused that issue.

major issue here is machine restarting, and external monitors disappear.

I dont want to spend another few thousand dollars to mitigate this issue. What are all the options that i have?

    Please advise.

What are all the options that i have?

I can only give very limited advice since anything I have to say would be a guess, at best.

Upon a restart, the OS, or the hardware itself is not seeing the second monitor. Why? There are other reports around these boards where even the Apple supported upgrade video cards do not work as expected. Especially difficult to figure out is that the same board will work in some Macs, but not in others that are the identical hardware.

One simple thing you can try. Zap the PRAM. This resets a few minor things like the clock, but it also forces the hardware to reexamine the entire system for all installed and present hardware, and rewrites that info to the PRAM. It may help, it may do nothing, but it can't hurt to try.

Restart the Mac and hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys. Keeps holding them through two or three startup chimes. Release the keys and let the Mac startup normally.

Looks like a hardware failure (not to totally resurrect a dead thread.)  Your GPU is fried bro, time to get a new one...  You can try re-seating it but it sounds like delamination or fan troubles so I'm not sure thatll lick it
