I think this was mentioned earlier.

This thread is getting rather chaotic and rambling because you launched it with numerous questions/grumbles.

The best way to use this forum is to start  new threads with each  containing just one question, preferably with a title giving a clue to that query.

This way readers can see immediately what the thread is about and more people will therefore come to your aid quickly.

So if you have several problems, just post each one separately and I am sure you will find a lot more useful help forthcoming  .  .  .  having said that, I must admit to occasionally drifting off the subject or even bundling a couple of questions together.

This is a completely pointless and futile exercise. You're trying to learn the application by making a project, and you're trying to make it the way you're used to making it. You might be able to force the application to work the way you want by using some combination of compound clips and secondaries.

There are no numbered layers or tracks. You can't copy and paste to layer 2. There is no layer 2. There is no number 2 in the timeline. The whole description of your workflow is based entirely on there being tracks in the timeline. Put everything in the timeline and sort it out by putting things on the right layers. You're calling them layers but you really mean tracks. This application isn't going to work for you with this methodology.

Oh and learn to use the clip skimmer and auditions might be helpful.

Yes, I'm reminded of an (imaginary) soldier who has spent his life fighting with a knife  .  .  .  .  .  .  he is given a gun, but persists in trying to stab his foes with it, instead of using it as intended.

On a possibly more helpful note, I would suggest that you should never start an important project with a completely new editing app.

Use the old familiar one for the serious film and play around with the new app for a few weeks to get the feel of it and learn how it works.

When you have mastered most of the techniques you  require, you will be in a position to start a new important project with confidence.

I read your posts as best I could. I don't think you can save this project the way it's constructed. Well maybe you could, but it would involve a lot of hard work and probably none of it would be copying and pasting. I'm not sure this software will ever work for you. I edit by making decisions, you seem to edit by postponing them. If you want to try using different shots with different effects you might see if auditions will help you.

    Hello Mark,

I am very glad that FCPX has been my first baptism into the waters of video editing. I am very happy with this application and reading all the 'troubles' it is giving you, a past master in this field of video editing, I am very very happy to have chosen FCPX as my video editing software.

I hope that within one week you too will feel that FCPX is the best thing you have come across!

You already know quite a lot, but I am sure that when you get the hang of it, you will be zooming away.

    Cheers.

I don't, using it, daily - you should!

with this attitude, you will never learn a new tool.

    you do.

in the Event Browser = selection

Not in the storyline  = final product.

there ARE no layers/tracks/lines/rows/ranks/bins/… in FCPX.

sorry to say, Mark, but your being on speedbreathless way of documenting a confused workflow, based upon complete ignoring the concept of a new&different tool makes it impossible to help you.

you got responds from the most helpful, forebearing and profound supportes of this board (and confused them) - follow their basic advice to learn this app FROM GROUND. or, STAY with track-based NLEs.

    I'm outta here …

    -bye-

Get down and dirty with the app - thus - understand its concept. Then come back and start a thread, if you feel you need to. I bet that you will love the concept ONCE you understand it.

    Lots a Fun ;-)

Ok got it....'not for all' software....every tool is used by several users and there are hundreds of ways in which people work....I have worked on more that 20 big audio and video softwares besides playing  with a thousand more being a music composer, arranger, programmer, sound recordist and an editor on widows as well besides mac, there is a universality to every application in a logical user friendly technological world, for the first time I have been asked to change the way of throwing , pushing and placing,I will definately keep trying but every tool is made keeping in mind several ways of work and then people custom apply that tool....it has more limitations than one can imagine.....here those who are used to it are so convinced, this is how EDITING is done....sorry to say this is not true....if Tom says he takes decisions faster....no Tom there are genres of film editing in which you can't go on finalizing chunks sometimes for the whole feel of a project you have to keep things open and keep making changes in the whole project specially after the whole project shapes up according to the emotional flow of the story.......not for fiction......dramas.....undoubtedly good for wildlife editors and documentary makers.

Unfortunately completed 70 percent of my project on this so will have to keep learning and finish it off...because other things like color correction and titles are yet to be done....

I'm trying and I will learn to work on it at any cost....but yes as I said it exhausts ....with my kind of editing..... and your kind of editing is not my cup of tea,we don't shoot footage with a clapper board always where we always know the ok shots, several times NG shots are incorporated in such a wonderful way for which you can't keep finalizing grouping compounding and making secondary storylines......we make dramas and shoot for music and can't predict the feel of the edit till the end....

Do feel sorry for you Mark but then, the situation is not as bad as you like to describe it. I hope that other video editors who are already doing the kind of stuff you are doing will help you out. But, understanding the level of your competence in video editing with non FCPX softwares, I trust you are not far away from riding your 'mad' horse [FCPX] expertly and see that it takes you where you want!
