Hi,

I'm going in a few days to the USA, and I would like to buy an unlocked iPhone 5, but I don't know wich model (A1428, A1429 GSM or CDMA) I have to buy in order to use it in Spain.

Btw, wich would be the price or the 16GB one, 649$ as it appears at the website apple.com, or may I have to add a 7% of taxes? I'm going to NY.

Thank you very much for your answers.

Regards

Taxes will depend on location of purchase.

Warranty will be valid only in US. LTE/4G will not b

function outside of US or Canada. Buy locally in

your country to avoid these problems. If you buy

in Spain or EU, warranty will be valid throughout the

    EU.

I called Apple Spain and the warranty is international, but they don't know what model I have to buy. They told me that the two GSM should run in Spain but they are not really sure.

Do you know something about that? Do the NY apple store sell the A1429 GSM one?

    Thank you very much.

The warranty for iPhones sold in the EU is valid anywhere in the EU.  You will not be able to get a US iPhone serviced in the EU.

The A1429 GSM is not sold in the US at all. The unlocked iPhone sold in the US is the A1428 GSM. The only variation of the A1429 sold in the US is the CDMA model. They are neither advertised, nor sold as unlocked.

Buy a phone in the EU instead.

The Spanish Apple Service told me that an iPhone bought in the US is covered by the warranty also in Spain. So my only problem was what model of iPhone buy, but if the only GSM model is the A1428, there's no doubt. The only one that I can use in Spain is the A1428 GSM. I know that if I buy that model I cannot use the LTE functionallity, but, unfortunately, in Spain the LTE will not be avaiable in the short term, so I don't care about that.

Thank you very much for your answers.

They gave you incorrect information. It has been confirmed here many times, by users like you who found out to their sorrow when they actually tried to get service, that US iPhones cannot be serviced anywhere but in the US.

Since the A1428 GSM is not sold in the EU, I'd love to know how they think they would go about replacing it if it needed service...

Actually I've read some cases of Spanish people who had some problems with an iPhone bought in the US and after having an argument with the Apple Store they got their iPhone changed (since all their employees say that the warranty is valid in the EU). They can't repair it, because they don't have the pieces, but they can change it.

So you clearly know more than every one else here

You have  been advised correctly but don't bother

coming back complaining when it all goes wrong

It is your money do what ever

That's my point... they can't change a US unlocked phone there because they don't have that model to exchange it with. The A1428 GSM is not sold outside of the US and Canada at all and no stores outside the US and Canada carry them as service stock.

You have a few answers, but I just want to add a few things:

Tax in NYC is 8.625%.    The Apple Store on 59th and 5th Avenue is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

You can buy an unlocked GSM phone, as well as a Verizon CDMA phone at full price which is also unlocked, but the LTE bands in the US phones are NOT compatible with the same LTE bands used outside the US.   Hence the different part #'s.

In short, I would follow everyone's advice and buy an unlocked unit in your home country if possible.

I think I will finally buy an GSM A1428 iPhone in the US. I know the risks, but the save is great (244USD, 182€)

Thank all of you for your help.

    Regards

PD: don't worry Peter Gillespie, instead of this I will call and call and call the Spanish Apple Service till find any solution . And I always can use the iPhone as a great, beautiful paperweight hahaha
