Feb 14, 2013 1:53 PM in response to kentmartby mende1,Apart from that Time Machine backup, I recommend you to make a clone of your hard disk with Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper or just using Disk Utility's Restore feature onto a different external disk or on a different partition of that external drive. This will simplify the restore process and there's less risk of getting a damaged system after restoring your data. Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant may fail.
See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4481
If you need help to create a second partition on the external disk, see > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html

Feb 14, 2013 2:01 PM in response to mende1by kentmart,Thanks I will get Carbon Copy Cloner. I will set up a partition on my external Seagate drive. I have over 1.5 TB free. How can I check if I can boot from this external drive?

Feb 14, 2013 2:02 PM in response to kentmartby mende1,Simple. To start from the clone, just hold the Option (Alt) key while you Mac is starting, so your Mac will show up all bootable volumes. In that list, you should see your external disk with the clone, so select it to start from the clone

Feb 17, 2013 5:55 AM in response to mende1by kentmart,I got Carbon Copy Clone and backed up my IMac to a bootable partition on my external drive. I went to system preferences, start up and booted from the external drive. Everything seemed OK as I launched applications to verify. I then booted back to my internal drive. After Apple replaces my hard drive how do I transfer the backup volume to my new drive?
Thanks for the help.

Feb 17, 2013 6:02 AM in response to kentmartby mende1,★HelpfulIt's easy to restore the backup. First, start your Mac from the external disk with the clone, and then, follow the steps that appear under "Restoring an entire volume (including system files)" since step 6 > http://help.bombich.com/kb/overview/restoring-data-from-your-backup
