    Yes it's under warranty.

They have replaced it once already but now they have a blanket statement that its normal and will not replace it again.

My first display started showing IR after 1 month and a half and this second display after 4 months but its getting worst quickly.

Apple must be losing money replacing all those screens and now they have remedied that by posting on their website that it is normal for these displays.

I'm a graphic designer and programmer and its hard working on images with code IR all over it. The only solution is to put the machine to sleep for a while then hope the IR has disappear so I can continue working with out artifacts all over my artwork. Lol

The Retina Display is hands down the finest laptop screen I have ever seen. The picture doesn't do the display justice by the way!

Imagine a 27" Retina Thunderbolt Display down the road! That would be absolutely amazing.

Congratulations on getting your display changed.

DarthKight, can you please tell me what you did for them to get your screen replaced???

I took it to the place I bought it from (Mac Alert in Adelaide) and they ran the tests and agreed it had IR. They asked Apple to replace the screen but they wouldn't! There is no Apple store in Adelaide or I would of went to them.

This is not fair, double standards.

Can you give me some advice?

I bought my rMBP in July 2012 (2.6, 16GB, 512 Flash Drive). I only started to notice the image retention the last few months. I did a bit of hunting online and found this thread. Tried a few of the IR tests available online (http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html) and the checkerboard pattern was really noticable after only a couple of minutes.

Ran the code in Terminal and was able to find out that I had an LG panel.

So bit the bullet and made a Genius appointment (Victoria Square, Belfast). I was fearing the worst before I brought it back after reading some stuff on here. I thought they would say it was normal but I need not have worried. The Genius was more than helpful and could clearly see the problems. He informed me that the problem had now been fixed by the manufacturer. He connected it up to a LAN cable and ran a diagnostic test. The test was the same/similar to the link I posted above. Left the pattern on for 5 minutes and then failed the screen because the IR was so bad. He said he had a replacement part in stock so it only took 2 working days to get back.

I assume they replace the whole lid/clamshell because the apple logo had a clear sticker over it when I got it back? Anyway, ran Terminal again, and I now have a nice, new non-LG panel. No more IR.

Price of repair (if not under warranty/Apple care)

LCD DISPLAY CLAMSHELL RETINA - £442 (GBP)

Hardware repair Labour - £24 (GBP)

Joseph, did you pay via credit card? If so it might be worth checking the terms of your agreement with the credit card company. Here in the UK at least it can be fairly easy to claim the money back from the credit card company on the basis that the product isn't fit for purpose.

Other than that, you may need to get heavier with your retailer - speak to a lawyer if necessary but I'm guessing you have consumer support organisations that could help? Frankly I have no idea what your statutory rights are in Aus, if they're anything like the UK's you should have a few options.

Thank you Ed for your concern, and yes there is consumer affairs here in Australia.

They said they will take on my case after my last effort to resolve the issue with Apple this week.

Apple customer support here in Australia seems to be in Singapore so it is a little bit tricky to get them to understand.

I would like to resolve it without bringing the Law into it because I am an apple fan am in shock that I have been treated this way but hope it is a one off occurrence.

I will be posting my result in the future about the outcome.

    Thank you.

Can anyone check whether the new speed-bumped rMBP that has just been released (Feb 2013) still has the image retention issue? I mean the LG screen model, the one that had it in the first place. I'd imagine they would quietly fix such an issue, but who knows...

I'm also interested in reports from people who bought the new model. The only report I've seen so far was from impulsedev (page 460) who got a Samsung display. I will order mine on Tuesday.

I just spoke with a contact at Adorama camera (they have the 'new' rMBP 15 in stock).  He checked a demo model of the 2.8Ghz version and it had an LG display.  Interestingly they are very aware of the IR issue and he says they have only had 22 units returned / replaced out of over 1000 sold since July due to IR.  Keep in mind that most of their customers are professional photographers.

FYI:  www.Adorama.com  has the 'New' rMBP's in stock and they have the top of the line versions available for $100 OFF - 2.8, 16GB, 768 for $3,349 & 2.7, 16GB 768 for $ $3,099, both with free shipping.  To get these prices you need to register for their 'VIP membership' which is currently available for free also.  They often offer AppleCare for MacBooks at discounted pricing also, or ask if they will price match B&H photo's $249 price for rMBP AppleCare.  The Apple product discounts only show once you log in as a VIP and the click the 'VIP' link at top of homepage and then scroll to bottom of the vip page and view the "exclusive VIP deals".

    Hello,

You don't need the law. Just call Apple, and tell them to visit this page on their own site:

    http://www.apple.com/au/legal/statutory-warranty/

Remind them that under "Australian consumer law" that you have the right to a refund for a major failure.

And the details on Apple's own site, define a "major failure" as one where "You would not have purchased the product if you had known about the problem."

Then ask yourself this question and tell the Apple service person your thoughts on this

If at first you get told no, just keep saying "can I talk to your supervisor" until someone with authority approves a refund.

    Good luck.

I bought my base model 15" rMBP yesterday at Grand Central Apple store at NYC.  It's a LG screen.  Don't see any IR issue.  Hope never see.

But I do have a bigger issue.  I use it to connect to work often.  It's Java based remote desktop connection.  Java did it's own thing about true HD so now fonts are all bury from remote desktop.  Did a quick google that's a lot of posts about it. Didn't dig into it too much. If I can't find a solution for this it will be a deal breaker.

just got a letter from apple saying they wont replace the laptop.

this ends my usage of apple products in my business as its too risky, other companies like Dell just replace faulty hardware not make up excuses to avoid having to face facts.

i would continue to use apple in my home or for my kids to play on because if goes wrong it doesnt matter. but for serious uses i will have to go back to windoze.
