Expanding on what Kirk said, the upgrade from Mac OS X 10.5 or earlier to Mac OS X 10.6 is not free (major new releases have not been free since 10.1) and has never been available as a downoad. You will need to purchase a copy of the installation disk set from the Apple Store. The price is quite reasonable. If you're in the US, see:

Once you have that installed, you can then update to the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, through Software Update.
