When I put my G5 to sleep it appears to be working fine as the screen goes black. When I attempt to awaken it, the computer restarts..... Any ideas what is going on or how to fix this problem?

Hi Bill, how are you waking it exactly?

What PCI cards, USB, or Firewire devices are connected?

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.

How to reset the SMU/PMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1436

    Earlier G3, G4, G5 models...

Hi... I reset the PRAM 3 times but the problem is still there. I tried to reset the SMU but had no luck removing the fan assembly to get to the reset button.

I sure do appreciate your help... Bill

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v

A couple dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

Well I searched the system log and think I found the time of the last problem not sure how much to copy and what you mean by "paste in a reply" a couple of dozen lines.

A little slow here as this is all new to me.

How do you "attempt to awaken it"?

What are your System Preferences> Energy Saver> Options> Other Options set to?

Is "Restart after power failure" selected?

As for the logs, a few lines before the restart up to the last line like that I posted below:

Above, you can see where an issue occurred, where I forced a restart, how the system handled the restart, followed by the actual restart which is the line "5/8/11 7:03:59 PM kernel Darwin Kernel Version 9.8.0:".

Just copy and pastet he lines into a reply in this discussion.

I attempt to awaken it by hiting a key on the keyboard.

In system preferences the only thing not checked in the energy saver section is "start up automatically after power failure"

Here is the log section I have as soon as it was put to sleep and when it restarted, hope it helps.....

Do you have automatic processes enabled, like some backup software?

What is listed in Login Items in System Preferences/Users/Login Items?

Alaso, when booted to a different account (creat one if necessary) does the machine sleep and wake normally?

  • 8. Re: G5 shuts down when put in sleep mode

I backup on an external drive but not aware of any backup software.

There were only four programs in the login items, some picture and ftp software. I am not at that computer now but can be more specific if you need it.

I had a second account previously set up so I logged into that account and put the computer to sleep. When I awakened it the same problem, it restarted and opened in the first user account. Didn't expect it to do that.

    Wow. Odd behavior indeed.

Will think some more on this....

I still have not found a solution to this computer sleeping and restarting when it is awakened. Any other ideas?

    Thanks

Hey, I just realized that you are running a Mac Pro, not a G5.

    What OS are you using?

  • 12. Re: G5 shuts down when put in sleep mode
    Bill289 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Mountain Lion - 10.8.2

  • 13. Re: G5 shuts down when put in sleep mode

    OK.

What model Mac Pro (from the Menu Bar> About This Mac> MoreInfo> System Report> Hardware Overview> Model Identifier)?

Also, what graphics card is installed?

    External devices connected?

    You're not alone:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1353551?start=0&tstart=0

    Google Search related

    When did the issue start?

    After a specific update?

    Something changed?

  • 14. Re: G5 shuts down when put in sleep mode

    Model - Mac Pro 3.1

Graphic - ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT.

I disconnected all the external devices, started the computer then put it to sleep. No change, it rebooted when awakened.

I believe this started about a week ago and I can't recall anything new. No recent updates or new software programs, that's what makes this baffling.
