Hie ....i recently upgraded my 3gs from 5.1 to 6.1 since thn...
I am facin the same problem of no service bt only when am usin cellular data or enabling 3g
Sometyms it goes in search mode n keeps on searchin for decades
I tried airplane mode i tried rebootin bt it didt work
Also thr was a rare case today wen i was't able to send txts even tho i had 2 bars
I removed sim n tried again
N it worked
Am nt able to get signal at my home where i use to get 5 bars
Thinkin of buyin a new phn :/

Unfortunately I am still having issues. Most of the time my phone reconnects, but NEVER connects in one particular spot... So it is only under certain conditions.
Came accross a recent article about Vodafone complaining to apple about a similar (if not, same) issue. A fix seems to be in progress.

The problem is linked to how your phone connects to LTE. If the signal is poor or patchy the phone will drop the service. Try switching LTE off and the problem should go away.
Settings>General>Cellular>Enable LTE >Off
The problem manifests when you upgrade to IOS 6.1

I wish it was that simple.
The LTE setting simply doesnt make any diference whatsoever.
I'm with Orange and have been for years, always without any network problems.
Since having the iPhone 5 I'm having this problem - phone spends ages "searching" followed by "no service" followed by whatever signal is available in the specific area where I might be (this is completely unrelated to my location, as it happens anywhere).
The stupid thing is after it finds a good signal, lets say 3 bars with 3G, if I leave the phone for a while and then try and use it again, it will go back to "searching" followed by "no service" followed by the signal available!!!!!!
In the meanwhile people are trying calling me and not getting through while this happens!!!!
My wife also has the same handset (iphone 5 64 Gb), she has not upgraded hers to 6.1 (still on 6) but it does exaclty the same as mine.
After speaking with Orange countless times (we are now only speaking to "level2" personnel) they still haven't managed to help us resolving this problem - but it has been established that the problem is def with the phone, either software or hardware fault...
We just dont know what to do anymore.

Sorry, but you are incorrect. If you read these posts, many of use have been dealing with issue for months, so not an issue since update. Also have had LTE setting to off for weeks and it does nothing to help with problem. Only solution I have found that works completely is switching to Galaxy S3. Works perfectly. Unfortunatly I prefer iPhone, so just dealing with issue until it is fixed. Hopefully sooner, rather than later. There is nothing that anyone can do to prove that it is a carrier issue. This is definatly a hardware problem. iPhone 4s works without out issue before and after update, Galaxy S3 works perfectly, only iPhone 5 has the issue.

I have come to the conclusion that it is hardware.The reason being is that each software update has not solved the problem.I'm with T-Mobile (now EE) in the UK and have been since I got my first mobile phone (a Nokia 6233) in 2006.I never experienced any signal issues with several Nokia phones that I owned in 4 years.However,since switching to iPhone in 2010,i have had persistent low signal issues in a number of locations which i never did with Nokia.I have owned the iPhone 4,4S and now the 5.
I have spoken to EE and they said that they are no network issues in my area.Also,when a friend who owns an Android phone has been in my house at the same time as my iPhone has been struggling to reach 2 bars of signal,his has been displaying a full 5 !! And,he is with the same network.
As i have had the same issue with all 3 iPhones i have owned,i have come to the conclusion that iPhones do not have the strongest antennas and even a couple of EE employees have agreed with me.
As much as i like iPhone for it's O/S and simplicity of use,I am not prepared to put up with this issue for much longer.I cannot see the next generation iPhone being any better in the antenna department so i will probably be switching to an Android or Windows phone when i next upgrade.

I can support you on this. My first two i5's had same issue on 6.01, 6.02 on 2degrees network. They had modem firmware revision 1.00.00. 2degrees carrier settings have to be set up manually and revert after any updates or reloads. Had issue up to 4 times in one day when sent those phones back. I still had my wife's i5 to try out and perservere with. Hers has only done it once before I changed the phone over to Vodafone sim. I have not had the issue once yet, which is many weeks and I am on 6.1 now also. Vodafone settings auto set up so I'm not sure of differences but I don't even see LTE in my list on prepay. This phone had 1.00.16 but now shows 3.04.25. I don't know why I don't get the issue any more, but I know earlier my friends one was on Vodafone and had same issue, just not as often as me. 2Degrees operates on Vodafone network anyway. Check your Modem firmware revision, just in case it is significant. This was driving me nuts, but I just haven't had it at all lately???????

I agree i5 has weaker antenna for same location as my nokia but when the i5 returns to strong signal the phone does not come back into service with this lock up issue. If I went into an area of low/no signal and back into 5bars I had to power down or use airplane mode to return service, so while I agree with weaker antenna, I still feel issue is software problem where the phone just stops looking to re-establish the signal after it drops out. My problem isn't happening to me any more and it has happened on this phone once, but not since network change and upgrade to 6.1. What cured it I have no idea, but I am over the moon that I have been weeks without a single lock up. Previously Iwas close to throwing the heap of **** at the wall!

Guys just to confirm mine has been up and running in South Africa without the "No Service" status for more than a week now. Steps that I followed after OS 6.1 installed.
- Reset network settings ("Settings" > "General" > "Cellular" > "Cellular Data Networks")
- Turned of LTE ("Settings" > "General" > "Cellular")
- Go to "Settings" > "General" > "Cellular" > "Cellular Data Networks" and change EVERY APN from "lte.vodacom.za" to "internet" (this would be network specific).
I also think there probably is some hardware issue, but this seemed to bypass the problem and I have not had missed calls since this change either.

I've only had the problem since updating to 6.1. I have Sprint service and they can't help. I have tried the Network Reset, doesn't help! I get Service Update Failed error and I run Service Update. So, is this an iPhone issue or a provider issue?? AND HOW DO I FIX IT???

I have now had 4 x iPhone 5's and 3 new SIM cards and I'm still having the "no service" issues. I'm on the '3' uk network. I've been using the phone now for a week without anything on it (not even contacts) like the Genius Bar man said, I've wiped it clean so many times I've lost count, I've phone my network provider at least 10 times now and still no joy.
I am absolutely furious that I paid £200.00 upgrade fee when I renewed my contract for a piece of ***t.
SOMEBODY NEEDS TO SORT THIS OUT. I HAVE HAD ENOUGH NOW!!!!!!!!!

Me again, sorry forgot to say that 2 of my mates have the iPhone 5 as well and when we go out together we all have the same problem, I also forgot to say that my "no service" issues are not constant but the max signal I get is 1 bar at most. This has been going on for 3 months now.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS APPLE I THINK IT WOULD BE A NICE GESTURE IF YOU REFUNDED MY PURCHASE PRICE??????

As far as I understand, after signal lost iPhone 5 is trying to search the network. But if there is more than one operator it might be a problem. If you try to search the network in manual mode and choose another network, iPhone 5 is trying to connect and does not recieve failure. I do not know why, maybe it is IOS bug. And after it you will see "no service". In this mode you can call 911 or 112, but "no service" still present. Lets try to do this on 3GS, you will see refuse and then back to your permitted network. It is OK.
In case you have poor signal or no service for a while and you toggle "auto network" search iPhone 5 is trying to connect first network, it might not your operator, I think. Therefore, you will see "no service" till you reconnect the network.
I suggest toggle network search "manual" and choose your operator.
Please, write me feedback if it works.

I have already tried that and it does not solve the problem.If anything,my signal is even weaker when i manually choose my operator.My operator says that there are no signal issues in my area so it has got to be a hardware problem with the iPhone's antenna in which some owners are affected and some aren't.Apple does not seem to be able to solve it with each software update,so it must be hardware.
I never had signal problems with Nokia,and that was using the same operator.
