we were given a friends iPod mini loaded with songs. it works great. however when I plug it into my laptop it tells me it needs to be formatted but in doing so it will delete all the songs on the iPod. I would love to add more songs but not lose what I already have loaded on there. Is there a way around this?

What exactly does the message say?

Are you using a Windows computer and the message telling you that the iPod is formatted for Mac and it won’t work with your Windows computer?  Or is it telling you that it’s synced to another computer and to use it on yours, you’ll need to let it erase the contents?

If it IS the message about being formatted for Mac and you want to use it on Windows, there's nothing else you can do to have it work on your computer except format it.
