Hi All,

I am experiencing a peculiar problem for quite some time, and got so frustrated in my inability to solve it that I decided to ask for help.

In a nutshell all my browsers (latest Omniweb, iCab, and Safari 5.0.6) can't load one particular web site, http://www.photo.net. I invariably get "Cannot Load Address/ timed out" or "Safari can’t open the page “http://www.photo.net/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding."

The problem is only with this web site, and I tried everything I could think of, and most of the advice I've found online. This include but is not limited to emptying cache, resetting the browsers, checking the firewall, fiddling with the DNS servers in Network and with Network Utility, all but in vain.

Any ideas for a possible solution?

Thank you in advance.

Hi, are you running any anti-virus or net nanny type software?

See if you can check the hosts file to see if it's blocked...

Hi, thanks for reply. No, no additional anti-virus or nanny software; just the 10.5 Firewall set at "access for specific services and applications" where all three browsers are allowed.

Regarding the host file, I lack this sort of literacy: I managed to open it but don't understand what am looking at... Here is all I could see:

    ##

    # Host Database

    #

    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface

    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.

    ##

    ::1             localhost

    fe80::1%lo0     localhost

    Hmmm, very strange!?

10.5/10.6 instructions, System Preferences>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

Unfortunately none of the suggestions work...

I tried something else too: logged in in my old system (10.4.11) which I haven't used for more than an year, and is kept on another HD. From there I can't download the site either.

The truly bizarre thing is that it is one and only photo.net I am experiencing problem with... I gather it is neither a site with huge traffic, nor it is the kind of site that gets blocked... just innocuous virtual forums

Hmmm, you report a different IP than I do, though both 64.95.64.39, 67.215.65.132 resolve to www.photo.net.

Yet pinging 64.95.64.39 also gives me...

    Ping has started ...

    PING 64.95.64.39 (64.95.64.39): 56 data bytes

    --- 64.95.64.39 ping statistics ---

10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

Quit all browsers, Open Terminal & paste this in & hit Enter...

    lookupd -flushcache

Apparently this command has been changed because it gives an error message. I did a search and found another one, sudo dscacheutil -flushcache, but still no joy

Ah yes, my mistake, the command was changed in 10.5.2 & up, I copy/pasted the wrong one.

I can't imagine what is making it use that IP instead of the one I first posted.

In Network Utility>Lookup tab, what IP does it report...

    Lookup has started ...

I didn't edit the results; just copied and pasted. Is there another way to find out the info about the Server?

Regrettably I have no info or access to the router though tomorrow may be able to reset it.

The DNS numbers in my Network settings are:

Hmmm, those last 2 are complete strangers to me, I've never seen anything like that.

I think I'd copy them down & remove them for a test.
