You would need to upgrade to Mountain Lion (10.8) to use iMessage.

Are you referring to Messages? You would need to purchase and install Mountain Lion:

Your signature says 10.6.8. To verify, click the Apple in the top left corner and select "About this Mac". What does it say for version?

Then it should be in your Applications folder - it is called Messages.

Well, you should be good to go. Please note the App is actually called "Messages"

I don't use Messages, but I believe it uses the Contacts on your Mac - so have you synced all your contacts between your Mac and your iDevices?

Have you checked iCloud? System Preferences > iCloud (you need to set up an account if you haven't).

    Hi,

I will leave babowa to explain the iCloud Syncing so your iPhone, iPads and Macs have the same Contacts.

    Open Messages.

Normally on first run it will ask you to create an iMessages account by registering an Apple ID.

In the Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts you can see what you have set up (everyone gets the Bonjour option but is is normally Disabled)

The Messages Menu > Accounts will tell you which Accounts are logged in (Ticked)

The Main Message window should be visible. Hit CMD and 0 if not)

It is a Tabbed Chat window and Interface.

Using the icon top left (New Messages) an item appears in the left hand pane called New Message

A Blue + icon now appears top right

This is a drop down and will give you access to Contacts (and/or the Groups in Contacts)  or Buddies (AIM, Jabber and Yahoo Buddies and any Bonjour people you can "see")

The Contacts will reflect your Contacts App listing.

If you know someone is using their Apple Email as their iMessages ID then click on that or their iPhone Number.

This puts their Name (As it appears in the Contacts App) in the "To" field (top left hand corner of right hand pane.)  Should be Blue.  (If red they have not registered their iPhone number or Apple ID)

This can be used as a Drop Down to change between iPhone Number and Apple ID (Or even to Buddy List names if they are on the Address Card and you have a Buddy list)

The Bottom text field of the Messages window will now identify which account you are going to be calling from (AIM, iMessages Jabber etc)

You type in here and then press enter.

It will automatically create new lines  (Use ALT and Enter together to create a Line Break)

    Lesson two.

Go to Messages > Preferences > Accounts

You should now have at least iMessages and Bonjour in the list

If you have AIM or jabber IDs from iChat before and these Appear in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you may have more accounts already set up in Messages.

Click the Plus + icon bottom left under the list of Accounts

This will open a new pane.

The top item is a drop down normally showing AIM at first

The others are Jabber/Google in the jabber section and Yahoo (Has been an option since iChat 6)

Apple IDs issued from iCloud ending in either @me.com and @icloud.com are also Valid AIM Screen Names and can be added under the AIM heading (Your Password has to be 16 characters or Less for AIM to work with it)

There are many Jabber servers about  but Google run a server for their Google Talk service which is a Jabber server.

    So do Facebook.

With Google it has to be a Google mail Account.

It has to have "Talk" enabled at the Google Setting page.

You have to enter your ID as it appears when you log in to GoogleMail (end with @gmail.com is different from @googlemail.com)

With Facebook you have to enable "Chat" on your Facebook settings

AIM and Jabber IDs will video and Audio Only chat to other AIM or Jabber IDs (AIM to AIM and Jabber to Jabber)

The Yahoo Account will only accept Yahoo IDs and will only do Text chats.

Once you have at least one of these type of Account or Enable the Bonjour one you will see in the Window Menu the option for "Buddies" and the CMD +1 keystrokes.

    This is a combined List.

You can separate then out in the Messages Menu > Preferences > General Section at the line about gathering all Accounts into one List (Untick it)

You may find starting even text Chats from Buddy lists easier than the Messages window for Buddies.
