It definitely has something to do with the OS version, because my phone was working just fine minutes before the os upgrade.

OS is a low level software that needs to interact with the hardware. So if this is indeed a hardware failure i would think it is being caused by the OS upgrade only.

No, it's not related to any specific iOS version.  The problem occurs during the update process where the firmware isn't installed properly in a small fraction of devices.  Sometimes this can be fixed by restorting and reinstalling the iOS, but many times a chip gets cooked and the phone needs replacement.

If you search this forum, you'll find threads about this after every iOS update,  Here are a few examples:

    Never mind the specifics.

Yet, the point remains, IT IS the OS updade (?process) that causes the phone to go faulty. So it is the software to blame!  The OS is created by Apple and the process by design is simply to plug in into iTunes(also created by Apple). So it is Apple to blame.

In a matured company, this (software/hardware) design flaw  warranty or not would expect a product recall.

That this problem has been there for the yesteryear iphones and iOS and that it is NOT yet fixed is a SHAME on Apple.

Despite all blames windows operating systems take, in my legacy of personal computers never did a windows os blow up any hardware on any of my PCs.

Like many others, I definitely wow not to purchase an Apple product ever again!

Wrong again.  The problem is in the hardware of a minute fraction of iPhones. There are always manufacturing tolerances that cause devices to fail during 'normal' operation.  That's why there are warranties.  If this were a software bug, there would be literally many millions with this problem, which is clearly not the case.

    Never mind the specifics.

You surely haven't. Never let the facts get in your way!

The hardware was working fine for a different version of the iOS. As you said, the update process "cooked" up something (hardware) inside. In such case, the software written is probably not compatible with the specific hardware version that makes the hardware go faulty.

As with Apple, there is no getting away because both software and hardware are purchased from Apple.

Even if it is a small section of hardware affected, then care not to update software on out of warranty iphones if Apple cannot take responsibility for their action. I understand there is no law to protect my interests, but that is because not many other products interact with the manufacturer who can inadvertently cause damages after the warranty runs out!

I think all other cell phone companies give you the OS compatible with your exact version of hardware.

This is not a personal argument against your reasoning, i can purely understand your stand as i have myself been an Apple patron for years. The only product i had to take to service was, when i was in college many years ago (an iPod mini) but at that time the customer support was exemplary!!

With due regards to your views, i have mine too. I shall close this argument here!

    Thanks!

No, not the "specific hardware version", but a marginally functioning component that got by until stressed by the firmware burning process.  There aren't many "hardware versions" if it were due to that, there would be 10s of millions affected.  The grayed out WiFi has been seen with every iPhone model, all with different hardware components, with every iOS update, and in MINUTE numbers.

I think all other cell phone companies give you the OS compatible with your exact version of hardware.

As is in the case with iPhones.  There is a different version of the iOS for every model, automatically selected when you update.

The bottom line is that this is a warranty issue.  If you can't fix it yourself, Apple will have to replace the phone. If your warranty has expired, that's the way of the world.  This is no different from a failed home button.

My iPhone 4S was also working flawlessly prior to the last update.  Then all wifi connections greyed out and battery consumption is a problem.  I have restored my phone to factory defaults, tried network restore, all solutions (and I do mean ALL) without any success.  I went to the "Genius Bar" and was given the sad speech about being out of warranty (how convenient?) and if I turn my phone in they can give me a REFURBISHED iPhone 4S with half as much memory (NO THANK YOU) or I can buy a new iPhone 5 for $399 or I can BEG my phone provider to let me have an early upgrade?  This is a joke! I don't want an iPhone 5 and to buy all the new components because the connectors are different.  (another brilliant Apple decision to shaft the consumer) I just want someone to acknowledge this problem which doesn't seem isolated (thanks to these threads).  If Apple is capable of "cooking" their hardware with an update, they owe their consumers an attempted update to fix the problem or the balls to acknowledge the issue exists.  I am sorry that for the first time I am considering leaving Apple products in my rear view mirror altogether if they don't make this right.  Since the death of Steve Jobs the only innovation has been ways to screw the consumer out of more $$ with different size screens and nothing to brag about anymore.

I has never encountered a wifi greyed out problem since firstly iOS 6 installed but now I'm thinking about to downgrade iOS 5.1.1 on my phone anytime soon within 2-3 weeks from now because never happy with iOS 6, big junk big crap ever.

Downgrade is not allowed by apple anymore. They only upgrade.

Downgrading won't heip.  It will void the warranty, trash the phone, and make it un-upgradeable.

I went to the "Genius Bar" and was given the sad speech about being out of warranty (how convenient?)

Are you saying Apple was lying about the warranty, or they deliberately scheduled this problem  "conveniently" after the warranty ended?  Maybe you're just an entitled guy who is owed a lifetime warranty, not available to anyone else.

if I turn my phone in they can give me a REFURBISHED iPhone 4S with half as much memory

False.  You get a refurbished phone with the EXACT specs of the one you turn in.  Drop the bool sheet.

FYI, refurbs have all new mechanical parts (buttons, switches, connectors etc.) and actually undergo more quality testing that factory new units.

I just want someone to acknowledge this problem which doesn't seem isolated (thanks to these threads).

It has been acknowledged, which is why Apple published a support article on it, which is posted in this thread.  As far as how prevalent it is, considering the >100 million who updated to 6, it's pretty d*** rare.  In fact, there are significantly fewer threads/posts now than there were with some updates in the past, including 5.1.1.  (I forgot, you don't read the threads, including this one)

I too had the same problem.  Wifi worked once and was able to scan networks after iOS 6.1.1 update.  After that, my iphone 4S has fallen back to the same old issue - unable to find wifi networks.

I'm sure mine is not a hardware issue as I was told by the Customer Service.

I got my iPhone 4S wifi working with iOS 6.1 by resetting the network settings. Today after updating to 6.1.1 even that does not help. Wifi greyed out And after that I restored my iphone but it still greyed out. And also my charge decrease really fast I dont know what to do.. and I'm sure this problem because of software... Apple should do something as quickly as possible..

Problem fixed. I had the same problem and I wrote here like an hour ago. I tryed to downgrade my phone toios 6.0.1 and when I was trying to do this I took my phone to DFU mode but itunes doesn't allowed me to do that after that my phone just works.
