Does Airplay send music directly to AirPort Express or is it sent to my Linksys router, then from the router to AirPort Express? The AirPort Express is new and is joined to my existing network, but not extending it.  I'm experiencing some dropouts when playing music from iTunes and am considering replacing my Linksys router (E1500) with another Airport Express.  If Airplay doesn't use the router, but sends music directly to the AP Express then a new router wouldn't be the solution.

In your network configuration, AirPlay first travels from the iTunes host to the Linksys router. It then travels from the Linksys to the AirPort Express.

Are both routers in the same room, same floor, or different floors? Do you live in an area with a high concentration of other Wi-Fis nearby ... like an apartment, condo, or dorm complex?

Unfortunately there is no way to guarantee that replacing the Linksys with the Express will solve the problem but it should improve things. The key is proper placement of each of the base stations to ensure that you are getting the best bandwidth possible for streaming. It is important to understand that in a extended wireless network, the extending base station can only extend the wireless network with the same bandwidth that it receives it, albeit with a stronger signal. Fortunately, streaming audio takes little bandwidth, but drop-outs are still an issue as you have seen.

Please take a look at the following AirPort User Tip to get an idea on how to best place your base stations BEFORE going out an getting the second Express.
