Try going in thru the back door...
Click on start > Computer > iPhone > Mobile Storage > DCIM Folder then copy the folder to your desk top

When I try to open iphone the action just hangs....had to end the task to get out of it...thanks for the suggestion but I still don't know whats happening...

You can use a third-party app to transfer your photos over wifi. Here is some info about our app 'Photo Transfer App': http://www.phototransferapp.com/ - It lets you move photos between iPhone and PC over your wifi network. I hope it will be useful to you!

Your solution allowed me to transfer the pictures! Still don't know why transfer over the USB fails but I'm not going to worry about it now. Had to solve a seperate issue with my KodakShare photo manager but that's another discussion. - cdrjohn
