I have purchased a non contracted iphone 5 after my iPhone 4S would no longer turn on. I am a buiness customer, and have been having substaintial quality concerns with Apple divices. I have had my last iPhone 5 replaced for 3 reasons, my phone would go into mute mode when I recieved a calendar invite over Microsoft exchange, there was a rattling noise in the phone, and no matter where I went my reception was worse than my old 3gS.
I was really frustrated and made them replace the phone after they told me they wanted to try and fix it. NO WAY! I have been in the apple store 5 times in the last 30 days all for iPhone product support issues. Well I guess I will be going back....
The most recent problem is that the phone gets VERY hot...to the point it is uncomfortable to the touch...the battery is draining in a total of 4-5 hours. i am nt going to be turning off my cell network as suggested. I have all apps off, wifi on, and this is happening. It wasnt even this bad with my iPhone 3GS. Not acceptable to be turning things off. At this point I would consider filing a lawsuit against apple for product issues. Everytime I go intof the store I have to replace the device and then restore it when I get home. I have wasted way to many hours doing this.
I am an apple fan, but yikes. I have 6 iPads, 5 iPods, 1 Mac book Pro, 2 Macbook Airs, and thunderbolt, and have owned 6 different iPhones. I think the devices are beautiful, but the iPads only last a max of 1.5 years so far, Iphones longer, but once the glue unsticks on the old iPhones, they are wohtless. The old iPods have all lasted, I dont know what apple can change, but they need to do something or they are going to be having another late 80's experience.
RECALL FOR SURE..>This is the second device I have had in the past 15 days, same problems on both. The rattling noise is back in this phone as well...what the **** is going on...And whay would Apple start painting their phones!?!? Steve is rolling over in his grave!
I am having the same problem...it is -5 F outside, this is a product issue...thanks foxcon...antohet relasted issue is after the phone gets to hot, you will then hear a rattling sound in your phone because is has unseeded the battery.
Also related issues are when hot if NAVIGATION is enabled in maps the phone withh shut itself off after getting a temprature warning.

Have you tried Erase All Content and Settings and setting up the phone as new without any restore? Let it run a few hours without loading any apps and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you have some corrupt file and/or app.
My iPhone 5 was doing the exact same thing. It suddenly, on Valentines Day, got hot and the battery drained to dead status within 2 hours. Contacted Apple phone support twice and did what they said. They told me to reset factory settings and that should fix it....... and still nothing changed. Yesterday I took it to the Apple Store in Pittsburgh and they fixed it by restoring factory settings but set it up as a NEW phone and did NOT load the iTunes backup. Apparently the issue was IN the backup files. So it sucked to reload all my apps and everything....but my iPhone is back to normal. Have used it all day and it's at 81% now. It hasn't been like that since Valentines Day. Not sure if it's for all heating problems, but it worked instantly for me! Wish they told me on the phone to do that instead of having to drive an hour to do something I could have done at home....but alas, I am once again a happy customer.
My 2 cents. Had the iPhone 3G, then the iPhone 4, and now own a iPhone 5.
Today, I noticed for the first time that the phone felt hot. Not warm - hot.
The phone is about a week or two old. What did I do new? I used the
Personal Hotspot feature since my broadband network was misbehaving.
After switching off the hotspot, the phone has cooled down. Will try it again
tomorrow. Of course, it could also be that summer is approaching and I
still havent turned on my A/c, and maybe the phone was sitting in
reflected sunlight. But somehow, I dont this thats the answer, since
I havent changed my desk position and it was equally hot last 2 days.

Thanks for the suggestion, I do not have a hotmail account, but your suggestion made me focus on the email issue, what I have is actually 3 iCloud accounts and 2 gmail accounts, checking the setting, the icloud accounts were all set to push mails while the gmail accounts were set to fetch manually, I changed 2 of the icloud accounts to fetch manually as well and left only my primary icloud account as push, I did that yesterday and my battery improved immediately by 5 folds and the phone is no longer heating up. I think apple should look into this issue closer as it seems to be software related and easily solvable.
Thanks again, Hope my comment helps.
I am also facing the same problem, My iphone gets hot during calls or or playing games or charging or using internet. the back portion becomes really hot and battery drains out very quickly. Does apple has come up with any solution for this issue?

for those of you who are having a hot iphone 5 that is really uncomfortably hot, may i suggest that you go to your nearest apple shop and put in your complaints and ask for an immediate replacement... a very hot battery is no laughing matter... batteries do get hot, but it should not be too hot, that your skin feels like it is going to burn...
Solved for the user I was helping with the problem. I tried these 3 things. I'm not sure which one fixed it.
1. Changed hotmail account from 'push' to 'check every 15 min'.
2. Reset Network settings.
3. Updated to 6.1.3
BTW, this isnt a hardware issue people. I'd stop getting your phone replaced as that's a waste of time and money.
Both my iPhone 5 and my New iPad get extremely hot.
I understand to a certain extent the iPad when playing games, but my iPhone gets so hot when I've only been talking for under 10 minutes. All my apps are closed all of the time or I close them once I'm done with an app.
I personally think it is ridiculous that a cellphone that is so expensive and supposedly the top of the range in the market has issues such as this.
Instead of fixing map issues in Japan i.e. iOS update 6.1.3, sort this issue out!

I was going to try a reset network settings to see if it will help with my phone heating up. By the way I have a white 16g Iphone 5 with iOS 6.1.3. While in settings I received a notification for carrier update. I opted to proceed with the update. After the update instead of having the enable 3G option, I now have enable LTE. As a test I left enable LTE on and observed the power consumption with a full 100% charge and GPS turned off. First thing I noticed if my phone was not able to get LTE it will go to 3G, or if no 3G it will go to E. Second thing was even after 30 minutes of FB and Twitter my phone remained cool. Before just 10 minutes of FB and my phone would already be very warmed. Battery life was not fantastic but much better than before. So far so good.
