"SIM not valid" means either then SIM failed or the phone is locked to a different carrier than the one the SIM is from. If it happened during a call it could mean that the carrier's system determined that the SIM is not matched to the IMEI of the phone, meaning that the phone was not registered properly with the carrier. It is not a software problem and your phone is not broken, but your SIM may be broken or your account may have a problem.

I suggest contacting the carrier whose SIM failed. The should be able to give you a new one. If they have walk-in service centers that would be the best way to go.

Mine says Sim not valid when I'm in the activation process. I just bought an iPhone 5 (pre-owned). I don't know if it's remotely lock or what? But right now, it's not activating due to the sim card.

That message means that the phone is carrier locked. Only the carrier it is locked to can unlock it. Only some carriers will, and those that will require that you meet certain conditions.
