As of last week, Safari has been performing strangely. Every 20 min or so, it just refuses to open a web page. The blue status indicator in the address bar goes an inch or two and then stops. To resolve it, I need to relaunch Safari but then after a random period of time, the problem returns.

Other than updates, I've not made any changes to my system or installed new software. Other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox are working fine.

I've looked online and found the following suggestions:

  • reset Safari
  • delete the preference file
  • use OpenDNS
  • create a new user account

None of these have worked.

Thanks for anyone with ideas. I really like Safari for the bookmark syncing and iCloud tabs otherwise I'd have no need to fuss with it and I'd just choose another browser.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped during that interval. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

It has happened again. This was an intermittent issue back in January. Once I found fosterius' post, which included trouble-shooting I tried to no avail, I thought I would check back here to see of any results. However, the problem has not occurred since today. The issue is intermittent and annoying.

Since last post, I did a reinstall of Mountain Lion - did not fixed the issue. I am running no extensions, and the only "Other" installations are FlashPlayer, Flip4Mac, and Java.

Here's another extract which occurred approximately at the time I noticed.

I brought my iMac to the Genius Bar. They kept the computer for three days, gave it back with no written details of what they fixed. Still having same issues. Have no clue what's wrong. Safari, iTunes, Mail will not connect to internet – intermittent dropouts. Only thing that I can do is turn turn Wi-Fi off then on again.
