Printing from the iPad, requires either:
1. An "AirPrint Compatible" printer
2. a software designed to assist you to print from the iPad
If you have an "air print compatible" printer, and it is not working, see - http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/airprint/#section_1.
If your printer is not "air print compatible", try searching out an application from the Apps store that will work for you. Simply do a google search for "Printing from iPad". There are some softwares available, that will allow you to do this, without an "air print compatible" printer.

If your HP printer is listed on this website, you have an AirPrint printer. Simply follow the instructions included with the printer and you should be fine. Every once in a while, the printer may need a firmware update out of the box and you can download those from the HP website.
So ..... Is your printer on that list and if so have you attempted anything at all?
