I use FCP X to produce an online News Show. It's a really fast way to drag and drop pre-made GX.

However the one and only issue keeps popping up.

Screen shot 2013-02-07 at 11.04.20 AM.png

When I click on the "Change the Apperance of the Clips in Timeline" button

located bottom right of the timeline to adjust clip height... everything closes, a blue screen appears

across both monitors and then the desktop reboots...

No crash report message or anything. Luckily the timeline seems to save before crash.

At first I thought maybe it was having Non-ECC Ram? So I installed apple cert. ECC thinking it was a

ram syncing issue... Nope still happens.

i thought maybe GX card? but I'm using a 5870 that I bought from apple.

And I am not updating to lion because I have older Apps that will not run on it!

This is the report log from console just before the crash:

I have had that same problem. It might be related to trying to perform that function while there is a lot of rendering going on, but I have not been able to determine that for certain.

I had a huge problem only slightly later and trashing preferences brought everything back.

If you don't have it, download Preference Manager. It will provide a n easy wy to delete the FCPX preferences.

Forgot to mention the crash happens sometimes when I click the

    "Share destinations button too"

Even though I said I wouldn't update to MT Lion.  I Just Did.

Luckily I have an older mac with FCP 6. So those projects are ok.

I noticed XDCAM drivers kept showing up in the console before every crash.

I am using xdcamHD MPEG 2 in the timeline. This may be the cause.

I updated all the SONY drivers and Transfer plugins.

That with MT Lion I'll see if things run smoother.

I'm also going to implement proxies during editing, in case MPEG2 is too unstable in timeline.

I don't want to convert all imports to pro-res... pro-res files are just too big.

I also have 32GB of ECC Ram and an SSD Drive on the way...

    I'll keep this updated

I notice this crash seems to be related to while the audio line waveform is rendering. For example, the default is to show the clips over a thin horizontal image of the audio waveform. Click that button before those waveforms have been drawn and FCPX will crash, blue screen, etc.

However, wait until all of those waveforms are drawn, click that button and it doesn't crash for me. Exact same video, exact same number of clips, on the same computer, running the same OS, same RAM, same graphic card, et all. In short, with all other variables seeming to be identical, the crash appears to be hooked to timing of the cick. Wait until all of the mini waveforms are rendered and it may work for you. If so, this is a BUG that should be squashed by Apple.

    click that button

Which button? The share button or the clip appearence button or both?

Sorry, the "change appearance of clips in the timeline" button. I can make FCP X crash every time by clicking that while the waveforms are being drawn. Wait until they are all drawn and then click it and it works as expected (no crash).

The crash itself is a harsh one. Not only is FCP X crashing but it is also crashing Finder (which will close open programs too). Apple needs to fix this.

Not that this is much relevant to the issue at hand, but crashing the Finder does NOT close open programs.

(The Finder is a program much like any other). You are experiencing a harsh crash of OS X itself.

What are your system specs? I tried that on a two hour project after trashing caches and couldn't do it. Are you using XDCAM footage as well?

Using prores 422 footage on latest version of Snow Leopard with 12GB of RAM iMac 2010 2.93GHZ i7 quad.

I can make this crash every time if I'll click that button while those waveforms are being drawn. Once they are drawn, it won't crash anymore.

I know some feedback might be upgrade the OS but I (too) need rosetta. I wish Apple spun that off as a separate product that could be purchased (and thus justifying the maintenance with OS upgrades). Some needed programs just don't have non-Power PC versions. Alternatively, I wish Apple would change the licensing to allow Snow Leopard (and thus Rosetta) to be run in a virtual machine within Parallels.

It will also crash the same way if I click the "Show or hide background tasks" (percentage icon) to the left of HR MIN SEC FR just under the main video playback window. I must wait until the waveform is fully drawn. Then clicking either works as expected.

LOL Well this was my fix...

I installed 32 gigs of ECC apple cert. Ram

Clean installed MT LION on a OWC 6G SSD 240G drive.

Used the NEW OSx to do a drive mitigation of all apps and user info

    from the old system drive.

Everything copied clean and is working.

So far nothing crashes.  Apps all work... no panics...

Used black magic disk speed test on SSD (before intalling OS on it), it reads at 200MB/s compared

to the old 7200 rpm that was doing 75MB/s. Pretty cool.

    Proxies are ProRes too ;-)

I agree though.. Absolute no reason to convert to Opt. Media. Which is just one more degredation of image quality. Convert org to proxies and when exporting out... Use the originals.

    _____________

First to try  hit "Revert to original Layout" from the windows menu..... (DOnt think it will help but worth a shot)

I notice you state that you more than one monitor.... Final Cut Pro X --- suffers from severe erratic behavior when more than on is connected...

On my machine (Two monitors) -- 90% of the time FCPx keeps displaying the clip currently selected in the event library although I am in the timeline.... Also, when I click and select an effect in the inspector and hit delete (To delete the effect) FCPx will delete the clip on the which the effect is inserted. All those problems are not there on a single monitor setup... My partner has severe issues as well. If his main OS X Menu bar is on, say the right monitor (Two identical monitors) and he choose to show viewers on 2nd display. The content turns purple or green. If he moves the OS X Menu bar to the other display... no problem.. Etc etc etc... using multiple monitors with FCPx is quite an exciting exerience full of surprises all day ;-)))

    In your case...

Try using ONE display only.. JUST to check if it still happens. And I mean.. Physically UNPLUG the 2nd display and reboot the Mac...

If THAT helps... Plug in the other monitor and and reboot Mac (You dont have to reboot, but I recommend that). Now goto system preferences and click displays... IN "Arrangement" drag the white OS X Menu bar to the other display... Other as in .... where it was NOT when the problem was occuring...

Now boot FCPx... and hit "Revert to original Layout" from the windows menu.....

I don;t have any problems using two monitors on a 2010 Mac Pro.  Have yet to run an additional monitor on the current 27inch iMac.

I too on MP Nehalem did NOT have that problem. iMac and rMBP (as defondor would say it; another story)

It looks as if it is the graphics card problem, that being the obvious difference between the two machines.

or perhaps the Thunderbolt connection carrying the signal. Who knows... I am NO expert in this regard.
